Major Traffic Chaos After Truck Incident on Laviolette Bridge

Early this Tuesday morning, anyone heading across the Laviolette Bridge in Trois-Rivières quickly realized it would not be an ordinary commute. Around 7 a.m., a fully loaded 53-foot truck lost control while descending the northbound side of the bridge. According to reports from the Sûreté du Québec, the truck skidded, struck the concrete barrier, and ended up stuck across both lanes.

The impact was forceful enough to break the truck’s steering, leaving the vehicle completely immobilized. Because of its massive size, the truck could not simply be moved out of the way. Instead, a specialized heavy-duty tow truck had to be called in to shift the vehicle. Until that operation was completed, all northbound traffic on the bridge came to a halt.

Fortunately, the driver walked away without injury, which was a relief given the potential severity of an accident at that location. But while no lives were lost, the morning rush hour took a heavy hit. For nearly an hour, vehicles were forced to a standstill, and by the time the lanes reopened around 7:55 a.m., the damage to traffic flow was already done.

Drivers approaching the bridge faced long delays, with congestion stretching out for several kilometers. For many commuters, what is usually a routine trip turned into a frustrating and time-consuming ordeal. Patience was tested as lines of cars and trucks crept forward slowly once the lanes were cleared, with the backlog taking considerable time to ease.

The Laviolette Bridge, as one of the main connections across the St. Lawrence in the Mauricie region, carries heavy daily traffic, especially during peak hours. Any disruption there has an immediate ripple effect on the surrounding road network. This morning’s incident served as another reminder of just how vulnerable traffic flow is when something goes wrong in such a critical spot.

While the incident was wrapped up without injuries and the bridge reopened relatively quickly, the congestion highlighted the challenges of moving such massive vehicles when accidents occur. According to SQ spokesperson Sergeant Éloïse Cossette, the truck was so firmly wedged in place that specialized towing equipment was absolutely necessary before the road could be cleared.

By mid-morning, traffic conditions had improved, but many commuters had already arrived late to work, appointments, or school. For the driver involved, the morning undoubtedly turned into an ordeal, though escaping without harm was a fortunate outcome. For everyone else, it was a stressful reminder that a single moment on the road can cause wide-ranging disruption.

In the end, Tuesday morning’s drive over the Laviolette Bridge was marked not by its usual flow, but by a sudden standstill—a traffic nightmare sparked by one truck’s slip at just the wrong time.
