Malcolm Brogdon Draws Knicks, Warriors Interest Amid Free Agency Uncertainty
The NBA offseason always comes with its fair share of intrigue, and right now one name that’s floating around a lot is Malcolm Brogdon. The veteran guard, who many will remember for his strong stint with the Boston Celtics, is back on the market and still looking for the right landing spot. Despite the offseason winding down, a couple of teams are still keeping him firmly on their radar—most notably the New York Knicks and the Golden State Warriors.
Now, reports initially suggested that the Knicks had interest in multiple guards, including Brogdon, Ben Simmons, and Landry Shamet. According to SNY’s Ian Begley, conversations with Simmons were held but never turned into a formal offer. Shamet and Brogdon were also being considered as potential fits for the team’s final roster spot. But just recently, the Knicks signed Shamet, which might indicate that their path with Brogdon is cooling off. That move could open the door for another franchise to step in.

Enter the Warriors. Golden State has been linked to Brogdon for weeks, and with New York seemingly heading in a different direction, the Warriors now have a much clearer lane to pursue him. This makes sense for them because Stephen Curry, as incredible as he still is, will be 37 heading into his 17th season. While he has managed to stay relatively healthy the past two years, history shows that relying too heavily on him can be risky. The team has struggled in the past when Curry has missed time, and a reliable backup guard could be a crucial addition.
Brogdon, of course, isn’t just any backup option. In his one season with the Celtics during the 2022–23 campaign, he averaged 14.9 points, 3.7 assists, and 4.2 rebounds across 67 games, ultimately winning the NBA Sixth Man of the Year Award. That performance reminded the league of how impactful he can be when healthy. Unfortunately, injuries have slowed him down since then. After being traded to Portland in the Jrue Holiday deal and later spending time with the Wizards, Brogdon only managed to appear in 63 games over two seasons due to a torn thumb ligament and a sprained ankle.
Still, when he’s available, his veteran presence, efficient scoring, and steady ball-handling make him a valuable piece for any contender. The Knicks’ decision to go with Shamet might close that chapter, but it simultaneously positions Golden State—or even a team like Minnesota, who has also been mentioned—as strong candidates to land him.
So as training camp nears, Brogdon’s future remains a key storyline to follow. Whether he ends up in New York, San Francisco, or somewhere else, it’s clear that he still carries the reputation of a player who can swing a second unit and provide leadership when it’s needed most. For teams chasing deep playoff runs, that kind of addition could make all the difference.
