Massey Hall Gears Up for Neil Young’s 80th Birthday Tribute
Hey, so here’s something really exciting for music fans: Neil Young is about to hit a huge milestone—his 80th birthday—and Toronto’s iconic Massey Hall is getting ready to celebrate in style. On November 12, a special tribute concert called NY80: A Celebration of Neil Young and His Music is being held, and it’s already shaping up to be an unforgettable night.
The event is bringing together some of Canada’s finest musicians. Confirmed performers include Jim Cuddy from Blue Rodeo, Kathleen Edwards, Donovan Woods, Joel Plaskett, Dallas Green from City and Colour, Serena Ryder, Julian Taylor, Skye Wallace, and Gordie Johnson of Big Sugar. And this isn’t even the full lineup—more acts are expected to be added. Hosting the evening will be CBC Radio’s Tom Power, keeping the night flowing and lively.
The concert is being organized by Dale Gago, a long-time Neil Young fan and promoter. Gago has mentioned that he first tried to set up a tribute for Neil’s 75th birthday back in 2020, but COVID-19 put those plans on hold. This year, he decided it was finally the right time, and he even hopes to extend an invitation to Neil Young himself to join the celebration. All proceeds from the concert will benefit MusiCounts, Canada’s music education charity connected to the Juno Awards, so it’s going to support a great cause while honoring one of Canada’s most legendary artists.

For context, Massey Hall has a long history with Neil Young. He first performed there on January 19, 1971, and that concert became one of his most celebrated live recordings. Over the years, the hall has hosted multiple tributes to his work, including a 2009 Luminato Festival tribute to Live at Massey Hall , although Young didn’t attend that event. He has spent much of his life between Canada and the U.S., officially becoming a dual citizen in 2020.
Neil Young’s music is still as politically and socially charged as ever. Earlier this year, he released a new song called Big Crime with his band the Chrome Hearts, critiquing the Trump administration. Offstage, he and his wife Daryl Hannah have been spending more time in Canada, including at their Ontario cottage, and he even recently gave a benefit concert in Lakefield for a historic farm connected to a local school.
This 80th-birthday concert is expected to cover Young’s entire career, including his work with Buffalo Springfield and all the classics that made him a household name. Tickets are set to go on sale soon through the Massey Hall website, and fans are already buzzing about the chance to see so many talented Canadian artists paying tribute to a true music legend. It’s shaping up to be a night where Neil Young’s life and legacy are celebrated in the very city where his career first soared.
So, if you love Neil Young or just great music in general, this is one Toronto event you won’t want to miss. It’s more than a concert—it’s a heartfelt homage to a Canadian icon and his enduring influence on music around the world.
