Matt Grzelcyk Gets PTO Chance With Chicago Blackhawks
Former Boston Bruins defenseman Matt Grzelcyk is getting another shot in the NHL, and it comes in the form of a professional tryout contract with the Chicago Blackhawks. The news was first reported by Elliotte Friedman, who admitted he was surprised to see Grzelcyk still unsigned after a strong season. For someone who just set career highs in scoring, it seemed unusual that he remained on the market this late into September.
Grzelcyk, a Massachusetts native, spent most of his career with the Bruins before moving on to the Pittsburgh Penguins for the 2024–25 season. That move ended up being a blessing for him. In Pittsburgh, he managed to play all 82 games, posting one goal and 39 assists for 40 total points. Those numbers weren’t just solid—they were the best of his career. He also tied Sidney Crosby for the team lead in power play assists, helping the Penguins rank among the top ten in the NHL with the man advantage. Despite the Penguins missing the playoffs, Grzelcyk’s contributions stood out, showing he could still be a reliable option on the blue line.

Now, with the Blackhawks, Grzelcyk is being given the chance to prove himself again. Chicago is in the middle of a rebuild, leaning on young stars like Connor Bedard to push the franchise forward. Adding a veteran defenseman like Grzelcyk on a PTO could provide not only depth but also stability for a group that struggled last year. The Blackhawks ended the season with just 25 wins, but their power play was one of their few bright spots. Considering Grzelcyk’s recent success in that area, his skill set fits right into a key area of need.
It’s worth remembering that Grzelcyk has been in the NHL spotlight for quite some time. Drafted 85th overall by Boston in 2012, he played eight seasons there, suiting up for 445 games and putting together a strong plus-137 rating. Over his career, he has 26 goals and 149 assists for 175 points in 527 games. That’s not elite production, but for a defenseman, it shows steady offensive support paired with a track record of responsible play.
Landing a PTO doesn’t guarantee a roster spot, of course. It’s essentially an extended audition during training camp, where Grzelcyk will need to show Chicago’s coaching staff that his skill and experience can add value to the team. Still, given how productive his most recent season was, many would consider it surprising that he even had to wait for this opportunity.
For the Blackhawks, there’s little downside. If Grzelcyk impresses, they can add a proven, puck-moving defenseman to help their transition game and support a young roster. If not, they lose nothing. For Grzelcyk, this is a chance to extend his career and perhaps find a new long-term fit.
All eyes will now be on training camp to see whether this veteran defenseman can turn a tryout into a full contract with an Original Six franchise.
