Police Activity Delays Dismissal at John Jay High School
On Monday afternoon, September 15, John Jay High School in the Wappingers Central School District experienced an unexpected delay in its normal dismissal routine. The cause was a police matter unfolding near Interstate 84, and out of caution, the school was placed in lockout status.
The announcement was made by Superintendent of Schools Dwight Bonk around 3 p.m. According to his statement, local law enforcement had advised administrators of the situation, prompting the precautionary move. Superintendent Bonk stressed that at no point were students or staff in danger. The lockout was described as a safety measure only, not a response to a direct threat inside the school.
As the lockout continued, families were notified through the school’s website and district announcements. Dismissal times were pushed back, and all after-school activities were canceled. This disruption extended beyond John Jay High School, as bus routes for several elementary schools across the district were also delayed significantly.
