Powerball Jackpot Climbs to $1.1 Billion This Labor Day

Dreams of becoming a billionaire are alive again as the Powerball jackpot has soared to an astonishing $1.1 billion, making it the fifth-largest prize in the game’s history. This record-breaking moment comes after yet another drawing over the weekend produced no grand prize winner, pushing the jackpot to this massive figure just in time for the Labor Day holiday.

The winning numbers for Monday’s Labor Day drawing were 8, 23, 25, 40 and 53, with a red Powerball of 5. At the time of the announcement, it had not yet been confirmed if anyone claimed the billion-dollar prize. Players who are lucky enough to hit the jackpot will face a big decision: they can either take the prize as annual payments spread over 30 years, increasing by 5% each year, or opt for the lump-sum cash payout, which stands at $498.4 million before taxes.

This Labor Day drawing marks the 40th straight attempt to crown a jackpot winner since May 31, 2025. The streak is nearing a record of 42 consecutive rollovers, which previously ended with a $1.326 billion Powerball jackpot in Oregon in April 2024. Clearly, big wins don’t come easily—statistically, the odds of hitting the jackpot are just 1 in 292.2 million. For perspective, the overall odds of winning any prize are 1 in 24.9.

Even though the grand prize has remained elusive, plenty of players still walked away with life-changing wins. In Saturday’s drawing, nine tickets matched all five white balls, earning $1 million each. Four of those came from California, with others in Connecticut, Florida, Illinois, Massachusetts and Pennsylvania. On top of that, three more tickets doubled their winnings to $2 million each by using the Power Play option—those came from Colorado, Indiana and New Hampshire.

For longtime lottery watchers, this moment is historic but not unprecedented. Powerball has made headlines before with massive prizes. The record still belongs to the jaw-dropping $2.04 billion jackpot won in California back in November 2022. California also claimed a $1.765 billion prize in October 2023, while other billion-dollar wins have been sprinkled across Oregon, Florida, and Michigan. All in all, as of September 2025, there have been 13 lottery jackpots in the U.S. that reached $1 billion or more.

Tickets for Powerball cost just $2 and are sold in 45 states, plus Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Drawings are held every Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday at 10:59 p.m. Eastern and are broadcast live from Tallahassee, Florida, as well as streamed on Powerball.com.

So as America heads into the holiday, millions of hopeful players are checking their tickets and dreaming big. Whether the jackpot is claimed now or continues to climb even higher, one thing is certain—this Labor Day has given Powerball fans across the country a reason to imagine what life could be like as the next billionaire.
