Powerball Jackpot Climbs to $1.8 Billion, Second-Largest in U.S. History

The Powerball jackpot has been lifted once again, and it is creating a wave of excitement across the country. Just this morning, lottery officials boosted the jackpot estimate from $1.7 billion to an incredible $1.8 billion ahead of Saturday night’s drawing. That number makes this the second-largest jackpot in U.S. lottery history, trailing only the $2.04 billion record set in California back in November of 2022.

The estimated cash option, which many winners usually select, stands at $826.4 million before taxes. If the annuity option is chosen instead, the prize would be paid out over 29 years, with the annual payments increasing by 5 percent each year. Either way, this is life-changing money—on a scale that is almost hard to imagine.

Saturday’s drawing will be broadcast live from the Florida Lottery draw studio in Tallahassee at 10:59 p.m. Eastern Time, and it will also be live-streamed on Powerball’s official website. For just $2 a ticket, players in 45 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands will have their shot at this historic prize. The overall odds of winning any Powerball prize are 1 in 24.9, but the odds of hitting the jackpot itself remain a staggering 1 in 292.2 million.

It has now been more than three months since the last Powerball jackpot was claimed in California on May 31. Since then, 41 drawings have gone by without a grand prize winner, but that doesn’t mean players have gone home empty-handed. More than 100 tickets worth at least $1 million have been sold during this stretch, along with over a thousand tickets valued at $50,000 or more.

Lottery officials emphasize that while the dream of winning is powerful, responsible play should always be the focus. Matt Strawn, Chair of the Powerball Product Group and CEO of the Iowa Lottery, reminded players that every $2 ticket not only offers a chance at fortune but also contributes to good causes in communities across the country. Since its launch in 1992, Powerball has helped generate more than $36 billion for programs funded by U.S. lotteries.

For anyone lucky enough to actually win Saturday’s jackpot, the advice from financial experts is simple: take a breath, assemble a team of professionals, and plan wisely. Massive wealth can change lives dramatically, but it can also bring challenges if not managed carefully.

So tomorrow night, as millions of tickets are checked and numbers are drawn, the entire nation will be waiting to see whether history is made again—or whether the jackpot will keep rolling higher. Until then, the buzz continues to build, and the anticipation is almost as big as the jackpot itself.
