Prime Video Puts 'Mr. & Mrs. Smith' Season 2 on Hold
Fans of Mr. & Mrs. Smith are going to have to wait a little longer to find out what happens after that explosive season one finale. Prime Video has officially delayed production on the highly anticipated second season, and right now, it doesn’t have a clear start date.
Originally, cameras were supposed to start rolling this fall. The plan was to move production from New York, where season one was shot, to Los Angeles. In fact, the show had even secured a hefty $22.4 million tax credit from the California Film Commission to make the move. But now, with the schedule pushed back, that incentive could be at risk. Productions usually need to start filming within 18 months of receiving the credit, though some projects that miss the window do reapply and secure new funding.
The delay, according to industry insiders, is tied to casting complications. Mark Eydelshteyn and Sophie Thatcher had been tapped to take over the titular roles of Mr. and Mrs. Smith, following Donald Glover and Maya Erskine’s acclaimed performances in season one. There were also plenty of rumors about high-profile guest stars being added to the lineup—names like Lily-Rose Depp, Francesca Scorsese, Levon Hawke, and Gael GarcÃa Bernal were floated around. However, none of those deals were finalized. Without a locked cast, the series simply isn’t ready to move forward.

This pause also comes as co-creator and showrunner Francesca Sloane, who developed the series with Glover, has inked a new overall deal with HBO. She’s now attached to write the opening episode of Big Little Lies season three, which could complicate her availability for Mr. & Mrs. Smith . While she remains tied to the Prime Video project, the juggling act adds another layer of uncertainty to when production can actually begin.
For fans, the wait is frustrating, especially since season one left off on such a major cliffhanger. The finale ended with John and Jane Smith in a deadly gunfight, and viewers still don’t know whether either character survived. To make things more intriguing, the anthology-style approach means season two was expected to introduce new leads with a fresh storyline while Glover stayed on behind the scenes as executive producer.
Despite the delay, it’s worth remembering how successful the first season was. Premiering in February 2024, it quickly became one of Prime Video’s top five debuts in the U.S. that year. It also went on to earn an impressive 16 Emmy nominations, including Outstanding Drama Series and acting nods for both Glover and Erskine. Michaela Coel even took home a trophy for Guest Actress in a Drama, solidifying the show’s reputation as a breakout hit.
So while season two is currently on indefinite hold, there’s still strong incentive for Amazon and New Regency, its co-producing partner, to get things back on track. The audience is there, the accolades are there, and the appetite for more stories in this world hasn’t gone away. It’s just going to take some patience before Mr. & Mrs. Smith is ready to return.
