Rashid Khan Breaks Record as Afghanistan Beat UAE in T20I Clash
Afghanistan cricket fans were given a night to remember in Sharjah, as their superstar captain Rashid Khan created history while guiding his side to a crucial victory over the United Arab Emirates in the ongoing tri-series. The Afghan team, after suffering a setback against Pakistan earlier, bounced back strongly with this 38-run win, and the story of the night belonged entirely to Rashid.
The 26-year-old leg-spinner etched his name in the record books by becoming the highest wicket-taker in T20 internationals. Rashid’s spell of 3 for 21 did more than just slow down the UAE chase—it ensured he surpassed New Zealand veteran Tim Southee’s tally of 164 wickets. With his three scalps, Rashid moved to 165 wickets in just 98 matches, a feat that underlined his dominance in the shortest format of the game. Earlier in the evening, Afghanistan were asked to bat first. The innings was powered by two brilliant knocks at the top of the order. Ibrahim Zadran struck a fluent 63 from just 40 balls, mixing boundaries with clever rotation of strike, while Sediqullah Atal brought up his maiden T20I half-century, scoring 54 off 40. The pair’s 84-run stand for the second wicket gave Afghanistan the platform they needed. Later, Karim Janat provided fireworks with a quick 23 not out from 10 balls, and Azmatullah Omarzai chipped in with an unbeaten 20 off 12 deliveries, helping their team post an imposing 188 for 4.
UAE’s reply started brightly thanks to their captain Muhammad Waseem. His blistering 67 off 37 balls, studded with six sixes and four boundaries, gave the hosts real hope of chasing the target. But once Waseem fell, the rest of the batting lineup could not cope with Afghanistan’s spin attack. The chase gradually fell apart, and the UAE were restricted to 150 for 8 in their 20 overs.
For UAE, bowlers Muhammad Rohid and Saghir Khan picked up two wickets each, but they struggled to contain Afghanistan’s batters throughout the innings. Despite flashes of resistance, it was clear that Afghanistan controlled the game from start to finish.
