Rebecca Vallance to Redesign Qantas Uniforms
Australian designer Rebecca Vallance has just landed one of the most prestigious roles in fashion – she’s been chosen to create the next generation of uniforms for Qantas. For Vallance, who has already made her mark with collections stocked in Milan, Paris, London, and New York, this moment feels like the sky really is the limit.
Qantas confirmed that its current uniforms, introduced in 2013 by Paris-based Australian designer Martin Grant, will soon be retired. The airline set up a highly competitive process to find the right creative partner for its new look, and Vallance was selected after months of interviews and evaluations. She admitted that the moment she made it through the first round of interviews, she burst into tears – that’s how much the opportunity meant to her.

Joining the ranks of iconic designers who have previously dressed Qantas staff – including Yves Saint Laurent, Emilio Pucci, and Peter Morrissey – Vallance called the experience both a “dream” and a “huge responsibility.” She said the design process will not only showcase her signature timeless elegance but also focus on durability, comfort, and functionality for Qantas’ 17,500 uniformed staff.
To ensure the new uniforms truly reflect the airline’s people, Qantas conducted an extensive survey of its workforce, including pilots, cabin crew, engineers, and ground staff. Feedback from that survey will directly influence the design. Qantas CEO Vanessa Hudson explained that the uniform is more than just clothing – it represents the spirit of Qantas across the globe. She emphasized that the redesign will be a collaborative journey shaped by staff input every step of the way.
For Vallance, this role feels like a natural extension of her brand. Known for polished evening wear and tailored suiting, her label has become a favorite among international celebrities, with clients like Princess Beatrice and Paris Hilton. She believes her brand’s DNA aligns perfectly with Qantas’ image as a premium airline. In her words, creating the new uniforms is like taking on a custom appointment, except this time the client is the entire Qantas team.
This isn’t Vallance’s first collaboration with the airline. Back in 2023, she designed pyjamas and amenity kits for Qantas business class passengers, an experience that hinted at what was to come. Now, being asked to dress the airline’s entire workforce marks a new high point in her career.
The new uniforms are expected to be unveiled in 2027, just as Qantas embarks on a new era with major updates to its fleet and long-haul operations. For Vallance, the chance to leave her mark on such an iconic Australian symbol is the fulfillment of a dream she’s carried since the start of her career. As she put it simply, “It doesn’t get better than this.”
