Shooting at Colorado High School Leaves Suspect Dead
A tragic scene unfolded in Colorado this week when gunfire erupted at Evergreen High School, just southwest of Denver. Authorities said a male student opened fire on his peers on the afternoon of September 10, sending shockwaves through the school community and beyond. Two students were struck by bullets, and the alleged shooter himself was hospitalized with critical injuries before ultimately dying from what officials described as a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office reported receiving the first emergency call at 12:24 p.m. that day. Deputies and hundreds of officers rushed to the scene, locking down the school as a precaution. Students and staff were told to shelter in place while heavily armed responders searched the grounds. According to spokesperson Jacki Kelley, the suspect fired a handgun both inside and outside the building, but law enforcement officers did not return fire during the chaos.

Once the lockdown ended and the campus was declared safe, families anxiously awaited word of their loved ones. A reunification site was quickly set up at Bergen Meadow Elementary, about six miles away. Doctors at CommonSpirit St. Anthony Hospital in Lakewood confirmed that one of the victims was in critical condition, while the other was expected to recover. The suspected shooter was also transported there but did not survive.
Investigators are still piecing together what led to the violence. Officials have not released a motive, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives joined local authorities in the inquiry. Colorado’s governor, Jared Polis, issued a statement of concern and support, saying students should never have to fear for their safety at school. He urged prayers for the victims and their families while pledging full state support for the investigation.
Evergreen High School, home to more than 900 students, sits only 20 miles from Columbine High School, the site of the 1999 massacre that forever changed how school shootings are understood in America. For many in Colorado, this latest incident feels like another painful chapter in a long history of gun violence in the state, from Columbine to the Aurora movie theater, to the Boulder grocery store, and beyond.
What happened at Evergreen underscores a troubling reality: this marks at least the 47th school shooting in the United States so far this year. Each incident adds to a devastating toll that communities continue to endure. While police declared that no ongoing threat remained in Evergreen, the emotional scars will linger far longer than the physical danger. Parents, teachers, and neighbors are now left to process a tragedy that struck in what should have been one of the safest places for young people — their school.
The investigation continues, but for the Evergreen community, life has already been changed. In moments like this, grief and questions rise together: how could this happen here, again, and what can be done to stop it from happening in the future?
