Shooting at Evergreen High School Leaves Students Hospitalized

Earlier today, Evergreen, Colorado was shaken by an event that no community ever hopes to experience — a shooting at Evergreen High School. Officials confirmed that at least four students were injured, including the suspected shooter, who is also a student at the school.

The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office said the incident began just after noon, around 12:24 p.m. local time. A revolver handgun was used, and shots were fired at classmates before the shooter reportedly sustained a self-inflicted wound. Authorities stated that law enforcement did not discharge any rounds during the confrontation.

Three students are reported to be in critical condition and were rushed to St. Anthony Hospital, while another student was treated for injuries believed to have happened during the attempt to escape. The suspect remains hospitalized in critical condition as well. Officials are now seeking a warrant to search the student’s home and school locker.

Law enforcement acted swiftly. More than a hundred officers arrived on the scene, sweeping the campus and escorting students to safety. The school was placed on lockdown during the search, but it has since been lifted. Parents were directed to Bergen Meadow Elementary School, where emotional reunions unfolded as buses and police escorts brought students out of danger.

Witnesses described a scene of confusion and fear. One ninth grader recalled hearing three gunshots while eating lunch outside. He said a security guard immediately told him to run, and at that moment, he realized something unthinkable was unfolding. Another parent, Jen Weber, shared that she rushed to the school on foot after receiving a text from her son. She admitted she always wondered if something like this might happen one day, but never thought it would be in Evergreen, the very community where she grew up.

Authorities have not released the shooter’s age or gender, but a spokesperson suggested the suspect may be very young, possibly not even old enough to drive. Investigators are still piecing together details, including the motive and whether any notes or communications were left behind.

The response extended beyond local authorities. The FBI and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives joined the investigation, while Colorado Governor Jared Polis issued a statement urging safety in schools and offering prayers for the victims. A vigil has already been planned at a nearby church to support families and students.

Community leaders and educators quickly pointed out that the tragedy reopens painful wounds for Colorado, a state that has lived through other school shootings, including Columbine. The Jefferson County Education Association released a statement emphasizing that gun violence in schools cannot be normalized, calling on leaders to take meaningful action.

As of now, Evergreen High School — a school of about 900 students, located roughly 28 miles southwest of Denver — is closed for all activities. The investigation is still ongoing, and updates are expected as more information becomes available.

For now, the Evergreen community is left grappling with shock, fear, and heartbreak, while hoping for the recovery of the injured students.
