Sonny Baker Debuts as England Face South Africa in ODI Series Opener

The excitement is high at Headingley as England take on South Africa in the first one-day international of their three-match series. What makes this clash even more special is the debut of 22-year-old fast bowler Sonny Baker, who has been fast-tracked into the national side after a rapid rise through county cricket and The Hundred.

Baker, who plays for Hampshire, has been making waves all year. In The Hundred, he picked up nine wickets in just seven matches for Manchester Originals, bowling consistently at around 90 miles per hour and troubling some of the world’s best batters. His standout moment came when he took a hat-trick against Harry Brook’s Northern Superchargers, an achievement that immediately put his name on the radar. Earlier in the year, he had already impressed with the England Lions against Australia A in Sydney.

England’s captain Harry Brook spoke glowingly about him, recalling how Baker had tested Kane Williamson, David Warner, Steve Smith, and Jonny Bairstow. According to Brook, Baker’s pace, control, and ability to swing the ball both ways made him “awesome to watch.” That kind of praise doesn’t come lightly, especially from players who have faced the very best.

This debut also marks a comeback for another pace star—Jofra Archer. After missing the final Test against India in July, Archer is back in the one-day setup for the first time since March’s Champions Trophy. Alongside Baker and Brydon Carse, Archer will add firepower to England’s attack as the team look to start strong under their new white-ball leadership.

Brook, who took over as captain earlier this year, has already led England to six straight wins against the West Indies in both ODIs and T20s. Now, with the Ashes looming later this year and a T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka on the horizon, the South Africa series is being seen as another important step in shaping the squad for future challenges—including the 2027 50-over World Cup.

England’s XI for this opener includes Jamie Smith and Ben Duckett at the top of the order, with Joe Root, Jos Buttler, and young talents like Jacob Bethell and Will Jacks backing up the batting. Adil Rashid provides the spin option, while the pace trio of Archer, Carse, and Baker will shoulder the bowling load.

South Africa, meanwhile, arrive on the back of a series win in Australia. However, they will be without their star fast bowler Kagiso Rabada for the first game as his workload is being managed. The Proteas are led by Temba Bavuma and include exciting young talents like Dewald Brevis and Tristan Stubbs, alongside experienced names such as Aiden Markram and Keshav Maharaj.

So, the stage is set at Headingley. A rising star in Baker makes his debut, Archer makes his long-awaited return, and England take on a South African side that has already shown its strength this year. All eyes will be on whether England’s youthful energy can deliver against a seasoned Proteas outfit.
