Super Mario Galaxy Movie Officially Announced as Mario Sequel
The sequel to the blockbuster “Super Mario Bros. Movie” has now been given its official title, and fans are buzzing with excitement. The film will be called The Super Mario Galaxy Movie , and it’s scheduled to hit theaters on April 3, 2026. The announcement came during a Nintendo Direct presentation, perfectly timed just ahead of the 40th anniversary of the very first Super Mario Bros. video game, which originally launched back in 1985.
The title is more than just a name—it’s a direct nod to the beloved 2007 Wii game, Super Mario Galaxy . That particular installment was one of the most imaginative and best-reviewed entries in the entire Mario franchise, so it makes sense that the movie sequel would draw inspiration from it. During the Nintendo Direct, a short teaser was shown. It opened with Mario resting under a tree near Princess Peach’s castle, but as the camera lifted into the sky, it revealed glimpses of space, hinting at the grand cosmic adventure ahead. Fans were treated to quick shots of classic Mario creatures like Monty Mole, Cheep Cheeps swimming in a stream, and Toads bustling about the castle grounds.
What’s especially exciting is that the original star-studded voice cast will be returning. Chris Pratt is set to reprise his role as Mario, Anya Taylor-Joy will once again voice Princess Peach, Charlie Day is back as Luigi, Jack Black will roar as Bowser, Keegan-Michael Key returns as Toad, and Kevin Michael Richardson will continue as Kamek. The chemistry and energy of this cast played a huge role in the success of the first movie, so it’s no surprise they’ve been brought back for round two.

Movie smashed records, becoming the highest-grossing video game adaptation ever made. It pulled in an astonishing $1.36 billion worldwide and climbed its way into the list of top five highest-grossing animated movies of all time, standing alongside hits like Frozen 2 , The Lion King , and Inside Out 2 . Its story followed Mario and Luigi, two Brooklyn plumbers who found themselves transported into the Mushroom Kingdom, where Mario had to team up with Princess Peach, Toad, and Donkey Kong to rescue Luigi from Bowser’s clutches.
With the new movie taking to the stars, fans are already imagining how the Mushroom Kingdom might expand into outer space. The potential for dazzling visuals, new characters, and thrilling cosmic challenges is huge. Nintendo and Illumination are clearly aiming to build on the momentum of the first film and deliver something even more ambitious.
And Mario isn’t the only Nintendo hero making the jump to the big screen. In addition to The Super Mario Galaxy Movie , a live-action Legend of Zelda film is currently in development with Sony Pictures, scheduled for release in March 2027. That project will be directed by Wes Ball, with Bo Bragason and Benjamin Evan Ainsworth taking on the roles of Zelda and Link.
So, between Mario’s upcoming space adventure and Zelda’s cinematic debut, Nintendo fans are about to have a very exciting few years at the movies.
