Superman Sequel "Man of Tomorrow" Takes Flight in 2027
James Gunn has officially unveiled the next chapter in his Superman saga, and fans now have a release date to circle on their calendars. The movie, titled Man of Tomorrow , will soar into theaters on July 9, 2027. This announcement was shared directly by Gunn on social media, and it came with a striking illustration from DC legend Jim Lee. The art showed Lex Luthor in his iconic green and purple mech suit, with Superman standing calmly beside him, a slight smile on his face and even holding a screwdriver as if repairs were being made.
For longtime comic readers, that suit has been a familiar sight for decades, appearing in both print and animation. But it has never been brought to life in a live-action film until now. This signals that Lex Luthor, played by Nicholas Hoult, will not just be back but may take his obsession with Superman to an entirely new level. In Gunn’s first Superman film, Luthor’s schemes ultimately ended in failure, with him hauled away in tears. The new imagery strongly suggests that he’ll return more determined than ever, possibly as an even bigger threat.
James Gunn has been clear that Man of Tomorrow will not serve as a straightforward sequel to Superman but instead as a continuation in what he’s calling the “Superman Saga.” He mentioned earlier this summer that he had already completed the treatment for the story and was eager to move into production. While plot details remain under wraps, the stage seems set for Superman and Luthor to confront one another again—this time with the added drama of Luthor’s warsuit.

The timing of the movie also fits neatly into DC Studios’ upcoming lineup. Before Man of Tomorrow arrives, audiences will see Craig Gillespie’s Supergirl in 2026, followed by James Watkins’ horror-themed Clayface . That makes Superman’s next big-screen outing the capstone of a packed couple of years for DC fans, and it will even debut before Matt Reeves’ The Batman Part II in October 2027.
The first Gunn-directed Superman movie, starring David Corenswet as the Man of Steel and Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, performed strongly at the global box office with more than $611 million in ticket sales. It introduced a wide range of characters beyond the main trio, helping to seed the broader DC Universe. With strong reviews and high anticipation, the foundation was set for more stories, and now fans know exactly when the next one is coming.
Whether Man of Tomorrow delivers another classic battle between Superman and Luthor, or perhaps an unexpected alliance hinted at by Gunn’s playful teaser, speculation has already begun. One thing is certain—the saga of the world’s most famous superhero is far from over.
