Suspect’s Texts Reveal Motives in Charlie Kirk Shooting
The shocking killing of conservative commentator Charlie Kirk has taken another twist as Utah prosecutors released a series of text messages that shed light on the alleged shooter’s motives. Tyler Robinson, a 22-year-old from Utah, has been accused of carrying out the shooting at Utah Valley University. Court documents suggest that Robinson not only left a written confession under his computer keyboard but also admitted the act in real-time messages to his roommate and partner.
The texts, which prosecutors described as “admissions,” paint a chilling picture. Robinson allegedly messaged his partner shortly after the attack, instructing them to check beneath his keyboard. There, a note was reportedly found in which he declared that he had taken the opportunity to target Kirk. When pressed in the messages by the roommate—who expressed disbelief and confusion—Robinson confirmed that he was the one responsible, apologizing repeatedly for drawing his partner into the situation.
In these exchanges, Robinson claimed he was motivated by what he saw as Kirk’s hatred, writing that “some hate can’t be negotiated out.” Prosecutors noted that Robinson and his father had clashed over politics in recent years, with Robinson leaning more toward pro-LGBTQ+ rights while his father remained staunchly aligned with Trump and the MAGA movement. This divide was reportedly heightened by Robinson’s relationship with his transitioning partner, something that became a subject of tension within the family.

Prosecutors emphasized that the shooting occurred moments after Kirk had made a remark about trans people and mass shootings—a statement that investigators now believe may have been the trigger for Robinson’s actions. Surveillance images, DNA evidence found on a discarded rifle, and the confessional texts were presented as key pieces tying him to the crime.
Family accounts also supported the suspicion. According to testimony, Robinson’s parents recognized their son in footage of the shooter. His father, a licensed hunter, feared the rifle shown by police matched the one he had previously gifted to his son. In later conversations with investigators, the father confirmed that his son had implied his responsibility in Kirk’s death, citing that “there is too much evil” and that Kirk “spreads too much hate.”
Among the details disclosed, prosecutors pointed to bullet casings engraved with phrases like “hey fascist” and “O bella ciao,” a slogan linked with anti-fascist resistance. Robinson allegedly dismissed these engravings in a message, calling them “mostly a big meme.” Still, authorities have treated them as significant markers of his political mindset.
Robinson later told his partner that he intended to surrender, which he eventually did with the assistance of a family friend in law enforcement. He now faces a capital murder charge, and prosecutors have confirmed their intent to seek the death penalty, arguing that Kirk was deliberately targeted because of his political views.
This case has intensified an already heated political climate, with Kirk’s killing being viewed not only as a criminal act but also as a reflection of the deep divisions in American society. Prosecutors maintain that the evidence—his texts, his note, his family’s testimony, and the forensic findings—presents a clear and disturbing picture of premeditated political violence.
