Taskmaster Series 20 Brings Chaos, Legends and Fresh Faces

Taskmaster has reached its landmark 20th series, and it shows no signs of slowing down. Greg Davies is once again towering in the Taskmaster’s chair, while Little Alex Horne continues to pull the strings in his quietly mischievous way. Together, they’re guiding a new batch of comedians through absurd challenges, ridiculous rules, and the kind of chaos that only this show can deliver.

This time around, the line-up is a fascinating mix of comedy legends and rising stars. Reece Shearsmith, of The League of Gentlemen and Inside No. 9 fame, has finally joined the Taskmaster universe. Greg and Alex admitted that they’d been circling him for a while, especially since his comedy partner Steve Pemberton did the show. Reece brought with him an unpredictable edge – simmering frustration one moment, obscure Dracula impressions the next – which kept both the hosts and his fellow contestants slightly on edge.

On the other end of the spectrum is Sanjeev Bhaskar, an OBE, a mainstay of British comedy, and a familiar face from Unforgotten and Paddington 2 . At 61, he slipped naturally into the role of “elder statesman.” Calm, suave, and endlessly supportive of the younger contestants, he somehow managed to glide through even the silliest of tasks without losing his dignity. Greg relished poking fun at his prestigious résumé while watching him crawl around solving ridiculous puzzles.

Maisie Adam, already a familiar face on panel shows, brought a very different energy. Quick-witted in the studio but often hopelessly distracted during tasks, she had a habit of misunderstanding instructions, focusing on the wrong details, and then blaming Alex for her mistakes. At one point, when told to weigh something with a bonus for making it “sexy,” she forgot the weighing part entirely and went full-throttle on seduction. Competitive, fiery, and just a little bit rebellious, she often clashed with the Taskmaster team in ways that were as funny as they were chaotic.

Then there’s Ania Magliano, the youngest of the group at twenty-seven. She leaned into the generational gap, often teasing Greg and Alex about their age, while showing off a quirky perspective that set her apart. Smart, sharp, and full of left-field ideas, she proved herself to be a distinctive new voice in comedy and one who didn’t shy away from taking risks.

Finally, Phil Ellis brought sheer enthusiasm and old-school showbiz charm. With his larger-than-life energy, cheesy looks to the camera, and endless catchphrases, he quickly won over the studio audience. Greg described him as a “puppy of enthusiasm,” someone who wasn’t especially competitive but threw himself into every challenge with infectious joy.

Series 20 also promised some anarchic moments, with murmurs of a contestant rebellion bubbling in the background. Maisie seemed to be leading the charge, though nothing ever fully boiled over. Still, the tension added to the sense of fun and unpredictability that Taskmaster thrives on.

As always, the heart of the show lies in the contrast: grand titles, respected careers, and serious reputations thrown headfirst into chaos involving gym balls, codes, and, yes, disgusting noises. Taskmaster may now be twenty series deep, but its mix of big names, new talent, and surreal comedy ensures it’s still as fresh – and as gloriously silly – as ever.
