Ted Danson & Mary Steenburgen Honored With Humanitarian Emmy
It was a heartfelt moment at the 2025 Emmy Awards when the spotlight turned not just to television excellence, but to compassion and community. Ted Danson, best known for his roles in Cheers and The Good Place , and his wife Mary Steenburgen, the acclaimed actress and philanthropist, were both honored with the Bob Hope Humanitarian Award.

The evening carried an extra layer of nostalgia, as Danson reunited on stage with The Good Place co-star Kristen Bell and the show’s creator Mike Schur. They weren’t just there to reminisce about the beloved comedy; Bell and Schur had the privilege of presenting the award to Danson and Steenburgen. Bell praised Steenburgen not only as a talented actress but as someone deeply devoted to helping others. Schur followed with his signature humor, celebrating Danson’s many qualities — including the fact that he’s “tall and from San Diego.”
After warm hugs among the group, Danson and Steenburgen accepted the award with humility and emotion. They reflected on the values instilled by their fathers — a train conductor in Steenburgen’s case, and an archeologist in Danson’s — both men who taught them to live with compassion and awareness that life is about more than oneself. Steenburgen shared a powerful thought in her speech: if life is truly made up of love and fear, then the world today feels unbalanced. She explained that their work is focused on pushing away fear and planting themselves firmly in love by supporting organizations that bring hope and care.
The recognition was no surprise to those familiar with their tireless advocacy. Danson co-founded the American Oceans Campaign back in 1987, long before environmental issues were common headlines. That campaign later merged with Oceana, where he has remained a vocal advocate and even testified before Congress about protecting our seas. Steenburgen has been equally active, working with groups such as No Kid Hungry, the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation, and Heifer International, while also championing the importance of arts funding in schools.
Together, the couple co-founded Angels at Risk in 2007, an organization aimed at supporting children and families struggling with addiction issues. Their efforts, spanning decades, highlight not just celebrity influence but genuine, long-term commitment to creating positive change.
And as if their humanitarian work wasn’t enough, their professional collaboration is still going strong. Danson and Schur are teaming up again for Netflix’s A Man on the Inside , now entering its second season, with Steenburgen joining the cast — bringing their shared values and talents right back to the screen.
At the Emmys, surrounded by friends and former co-stars, the couple’s honor felt less like an award and more like a celebration of lives well lived — lives dedicated to love, laughter, and leaving the world better than they found it.
