Teen’s Death in Police Intervention Sparks Questions in Longueuil
A tragic event in Longueuil has shaken the community and raised many difficult questions. A 15-year-old boy, Nooran Rezayi, lost his life after being struck by police gunfire during an intervention on Sunday. What makes this even more troubling is the uncertainty surrounding what exactly happened and the reasons that led to such a devastating outcome.
According to authorities, officers were responding to 911 calls reporting a group of young people wearing masks and carrying what appeared to be weapons in a public space in the Saint-Hubert district. When police arrived, Nooran was shot twice. He later died from his injuries. Since then, the Bureau des enquêtes indépendantes, or BEI, has been tasked with investigating the circumstances. The service weapon of the officer who fired has been seized for ballistic analysis. Investigators also collected masks and a baseball bat at the scene, although no firearm belonging to the teenager was found.

Fifteen investigators, along with forensic specialists, have been assigned to the case. They have already interviewed witnesses, both officers and civilians, and gathered video recordings, including one that shows the moments just before the shooting. Still, the BEI emphasized that their role is not to prosecute but to shed light on what took place. The director, Me Brigitte Bishop, expressed concern that private or parallel investigations are being attempted by individuals, which could interfere with evidence. She urged the public to cooperate directly with the BEI, assuring that the process would be impartial and independent.
Meanwhile, the family of Nooran Rezayi is overwhelmed with grief and frustration. His father, Sharif Rezayi, spoke about the unbearable pain of losing his son and voiced anger at the long delay before the family was even notified—over five hours after the incident. Their lawyer, Fernando Belton, stated that legal action against the police is being considered, not only to seek answers but also to prevent another family from facing a similar tragedy. Questions remain about why lethal force was used, why Nooran was singled out among a group of teenagers, and why identification of the youth took so long when he lived only minutes away.
Beyond the legal aspects, the case has stirred emotional reactions in the community. Friends and classmates have gathered at the site of the shooting, leaving flowers and mourning a life cut short. Concerns about possible racial bias in the officers’ perception of the situation have also been raised by the family’s legal team, though it is still too early to know whether that played a role.
For now, the community waits, hoping that the ongoing investigation will bring clarity and fairness. What is certain is that a young life has been lost, and the questions left behind demand careful, transparent answers.
