Teyana Taylor Embraces Music, Acting, and New Creative Journeys
For nearly two decades, Teyana Taylor has been someone audiences could not look away from. Many first knew her as the Harlem teenager whose over-the-top birthday party was featured on My Super Sweet 16 . Others remember her alongside her then-husband Iman Shumpert on Teyana & Iman and its sequel We Got Love . And, of course, there was the unforgettable moment in 2016 when she lit up Kanye West’s “Fade” video at the MTV VMAs. Since then, she has been many things: singer, dancer, actress, director, entrepreneur, and now, even a culinary student.

This year has marked another big chapter for her. After surprising fans by retiring from music in 2020, she came back this summer with her new album Escape Room . The project was described by Taylor as an “ombré album,” one that walks listeners through stages of heartbreak, healing, and renewal. For her, it’s not just about love songs—it’s about escaping whatever no longer serves you, whether that’s relationships, business struggles, or even your own doubts.
But music isn’t the only stage she’s owning. Taylor has stepped fully into acting, taking on roles that have quickly captured attention. Her performance as Detective Kay Raymond in Straw sparked a wave on TikTok, and she’s also appearing in Paul Thomas Anderson’s One Battle After Another . More projects are lined up, including a Netflix film with Kevin Hart and a Ryan Murphy series called All’s Fair . Taylor herself admits that taking this leap was risky, but she sees risk as necessary. As she once put it, “Everything’s a gamble. You won’t know until you take that risk.”
Still, behind the spotlight, Taylor has faced challenges. Just weeks after her interview with Marie Claire , she revealed that surgery was needed to remove a noncancerous growth on her vocal cords. In her own words, life had handed her an “unexpected Escape Room,” one that now requires patience, rest, and faith. Even so, her resilience has been clear—she sees setbacks as preparation for what’s to come.
Her career has always been shaped by the women and mentors around her. She credits her mother, who has managed her career, with keeping her grounded. She also recalls advice from Beyoncé about investing in herself and not being afraid to bet on her own vision, even if it means earning less in the moment. That mindset has allowed her to create on her own terms, whether in music, film, or fashion.
And yes, fashion remains another arena where Taylor shines. From her acclaimed Met Gala look designed with Ruth E. Carter to her plans for designing her own line, she continues to expand her artistry. On top of that, she recently enrolled in culinary school—proving that even after nearly 20 years in the spotlight, she’s still hungry for new challenges.
At 34, Teyana Taylor isn’t just back—she’s everywhere. Whether she’s making music, acting on screen, directing, cooking, or mentoring other creatives, she refuses to be confined to one lane. As she often says, she’s like a Glade PlugIn: wherever she’s placed, she’s going to light up the whole room.
