Tottenham Cruise Past Doncaster in Carabao Cup with Palhinha Magic
Tottenham Hotspur’s Carabao Cup campaign got off to the perfect start on Wednesday night as they secured a confident 3-0 victory over League One side Doncaster Rovers. It was a game that had everything from acrobatic finishes to emotional debuts, and the crowd of more than 42,000 inside the stadium was treated to a night that mixed both grit and flair.
The breakthrough came early, and fittingly it was Joao Palhinha who provided the moment of quality. Playing out of position in central defence, the Portuguese midfielder reminded everyone of his attacking instincts with a spectacular overhead kick just 14 minutes into the match. The ball had dropped loose from a corner, and Palhinha adjusted himself perfectly to send it flying past the goalkeeper. That strike immediately settled Spurs into a rhythm.
Only a few minutes later, their advantage was doubled. Wilson Odobert raced down the left wing and fired a low cross into the area. Doncaster’s Jay McGrath, under pressure, could do little as the ball deflected off him and into his own net. Within the opening 20 minutes, Tottenham had already built a commanding lead, though Doncaster did threaten on occasion. Their best chance came through skipper Owen Bailey, whose volley was brilliantly tipped onto the post by Spurs’ young goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky.

The second half, however, saw the tempo drop. Spurs looked comfortable but were not at their sharpest in front of goal. Mathys Tel, the big summer signing, was given a chance to impress, but a series of missed opportunities left him frustrated. Doncaster nearly pulled one back through a Glenn Middleton free kick that curled narrowly wide, yet that was as close as they came.
It was Brennan Johnson who eventually wrapped things up in stoppage time. After a clever ball from Lucas Bergvall, the Welsh forward raced clear and calmly lifted his finish over the onrushing keeper. It was no less than Johnson deserved, having been Spurs’ most dangerous attacker throughout the game.
There was also a special moment late on when 16-year-old Luca Williams-Barnett was brought on for his debut. With that appearance, he became the 900th player to represent Tottenham Hotspur, a milestone that drew warm applause from the fans.
Manager Thomas Frank had rotated heavily, making seven changes from the weekend draw at Brighton, but the mix of youth and experience got the job done. The victory not only ensured Spurs’ progression into the next round but also served as a reminder that depth and opportunity will be key as the season unfolds.
A touch of Portuguese brilliance, some youthful promise, and a clinical finish to seal the deal—it was the kind of night Tottenham supporters will hope to see plenty more of as their Carabao Cup journey continues.
