Tragedy at Minto Mall Car Park
A heartbreaking scene unfolded at Minto Mall in Sydney’s south-west on Monday afternoon, when two young children were struck by a car in the shopping centre’s car park. Emergency crews were called around 3:30pm, and what they found has left the local community shaken.
It was confirmed that a five-month-old baby girl lost her life at the scene, despite desperate attempts by police and paramedics to revive her. CPR was performed immediately, and specialist medical teams were flown in, but sadly, she could not be saved. Alongside her, a five-year-old child was also hit and suffered serious injuries. That child was quickly transported to The Children’s Hospital at Westmead, where it was reported the condition was serious but stable.

The driver involved was a 35-year-old woman, who police have said is known to the children. She was not physically injured in the incident. Witnesses described a chaotic and emotional atmosphere, with multiple ambulances, police cars, and emergency teams flooding the scene. Some who were nearby said the baby had been in a stroller when the impact happened. Many bystanders were visibly traumatised after witnessing the event.
Authorities have since established a crime scene at the car park, and investigators are working to determine exactly how the tragedy occurred. Early suggestions are that the vehicle, a white SUV, may have been mistakenly shifted into reverse instead of forward, causing it to lurch back into the children. Aerial images later showed the SUV straddling parking lines, with an overturned stroller and scattered debris nearby.
Paramedics were seen shielding their efforts to save the children behind white sheets, and police officers on duty were reportedly consoling each other as the reality of the loss sank in. The driver is assisting police with inquiries, but no charges have yet been laid as the investigation continues.
