Tragedy Strikes Riverstone Restaurant with Fatal Gas Leak
A heartbreaking incident has shaken the community of Riverstone in Sydney’s north-west. At the well-known Haveli Restaurant, a gas leak turned deadly on Tuesday morning, leaving one young man dead and several others in hospital.
Emergency services were called around 9:15am after the restaurant’s owner raised concerns for welfare. When first responders arrived, they found two people inside. One of them, a 25-year-old man believed to be a cleaner at the venue, was unconscious. Despite the desperate efforts of police officers who performed CPR, he could not be revived.
What made the situation even more alarming was the effect on those who tried to help. Five police officers, along with two people linked to a cleaning business, also became unwell and had to be taken to hospital. Thankfully, all of them are now receiving medical treatment. Officials later confirmed that “extremely high levels” of carbon monoxide had been detected inside the building.

The Fire and Rescue NSW hazmat team described the air as heavily compromised when they arrived. Gas detectors were deployed, the area was cordoned off, and residents in apartments above the restaurant were evacuated for safety. Fortunately, those residents were not affected by the leak. By the afternoon, specialists declared the scene safe, though further testing of the air quality is underway to confirm the source and cause.
The restaurant’s owner, Resham Singh, who only purchased the business last year, said he was devastated. He explained that a cleaning contractor usually checked the premises in the mornings, and his three chefs who lived upstairs managed to escape unharmed. “This is shocking news for me,” he said, visibly shaken. “It’s so sad for the family.”
Authorities have called the incident both tragic and confronting. Assistant Commissioner Gavin Wood of NSW Police praised the bravery of the officers who risked their own safety in an attempt to save the young man’s life. He noted that the moment they realized something was wrong with the environment, it was already too late—the exposure had taken its toll.
Community leaders also shared their condolences. Local MP Warren Kirby described the death as a tragedy and offered his thoughts to the family of the victim, the officers, and everyone involved. He urged residents to follow any directions from emergency services as investigations continue.
The investigation into the exact cause of the leak is ongoing. While carbon monoxide is strongly suspected, specialists are carefully working to identify how such dangerous levels built up inside the restaurant. For now, the Riverstone community mourns the loss of a young life, and the incident stands as a chilling reminder of the invisible dangers of toxic gas exposure.
