US Naval Academy Lockdown Sparks Nationwide Campus Alert
Earlier this week, the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland, was placed on lockdown after reports of threats were received, setting off a tense day for students, staff, and local authorities. The Naval Support Activity Annapolis, which is responsible for security and support at the academy, confirmed that the lockdown was enacted out of an abundance of caution while the situation was being investigated in coordination with local law enforcement.
The Naval Academy, a prestigious four-year institution that trains midshipmen for the Navy and Marine Corps, is home to roughly 4,400 students and is located in downtown Annapolis, about 30 miles southeast of Baltimore. Students were initially confined to their dorms and facilities, with armed security patrolling key checkpoints. A former midshipman described Bancroft Hall—the main residence building—as both a home and workplace for cadets, emphasizing just how serious it felt to have the building locked down.

Multiple reports indicated that the initial threat appeared to come from a former student who had been expelled from the academy. Threats were made anonymously online, using an IP address designed to make it appear that the individual was on campus. At one point, a midshipman inside the building mistook a law enforcement officer for a threat and engaged with a training weapon, prompting authorities to respond with non-lethal force. The midshipman was transported to a hospital via medevac and is expected to recover.
While the lockdown at Annapolis was being addressed, the situation drew attention to a broader wave of threats reported at other U.S. colleges and universities on September 11. Historically Black Colleges and Universities, including Alabama State University, Hampton University, Virginia State University, Southern University and A&M College, and Bethune-Cookman University, were also placed on lockdown or temporarily closed. Florida A&M University opted to shift in-person classes to virtual learning out of caution, despite not receiving direct threats.
By the evening, officials, including Governor Wes Moore’s office, confirmed that no credible threat existed at the Naval Academy itself. Law enforcement and federal authorities continued to monitor the situation closely, assuring the public that safety measures were enforced to protect all students and staff. The lockdown was gradually lifted as updates were provided, but heightened security remained in place, with campus operations adjusted temporarily to ensure everyone’s safety.
This incident highlights the careful coordination between campus security, local police, and federal authorities when potential threats arise. While the immediate danger has been resolved, the events at Annapolis serve as a stark reminder of the vigilance required to maintain safety at institutions of higher learning across the country. The midshipmen, staff, and surrounding community have since been supported through the ordeal, with lessons from the day shaping security protocols moving forward.
The story continues to develop, and updates are being provided as more information is confirmed by officials.
