York County Tragedy: Three Officers Killed, Two Wounded in Shootout
In York County, Pennsylvania, a heartbreaking tragedy has unfolded, leaving three police officers dead and two more critically injured. The incident began earlier in the week when authorities received reports that a man, later identified as 24-year-old Matthew James Ruth of Hanover, was stalking his ex-girlfriend. According to court documents, Ruth had been spotted near her home, even peering through windows while dressed in camouflage. Police were called, and an arrest warrant was quickly secured for stalking, prowling at nighttime, and criminal trespass.
On Tuesday night, officers tried to serve that warrant but couldn’t locate Ruth. By the following afternoon, Wednesday, September 17th, officers with the Northern York County Regional Police Department returned to the same property for a follow-up visit. That’s when the unimaginable happened. Hidden in a nearby cornfield, Ruth opened fire on the responding officers. In the first wave of gunfire, three officers from the Northern York County Regional Police were killed almost instantly.
The violence didn’t stop there. As Ruth advanced toward the home, he encountered deputies from the York County Sheriff’s Office. Shots were exchanged, and two deputies were struck and wounded. Despite being hit, one deputy managed to return fire, fatally shooting Ruth and putting an end to the deadly standoff.

Neighbors described the scene as sounding like a “war zone,” with more than 30 shots heard. Entire roads were shut down, schools in the area were placed under lockdown, and WellSpan York Hospital went into heightened security mode as the wounded officers were rushed in. The situation remained tense throughout the afternoon until officials confirmed that the gunman had been neutralized.
Governor Josh Shapiro spoke at a briefing later that evening, calling it one of the darkest days in Pennsylvania law enforcement history. He ordered all U.S. and Pennsylvania flags to be lowered to half-staff in honor of the fallen. State Police Commissioner Col. Christopher Paris confirmed that the two injured officers were in critical but stable condition. He also promised a thorough investigation in partnership with the York County District Attorney’s Office.
Federal agencies, including the FBI and ATF, were deployed to assist local authorities in combing through the details of the shooting. Meanwhile, the community of Spring Grove and surrounding towns gathered to honor the fallen, lining the streets with American flags as a somber procession carried the officers’ bodies.
At this point, it remains unclear whether Ruth had been waiting specifically for his ex-girlfriend or if his intent was to target the arresting officers. What is certain is that five officers paid the ultimate price for simply doing their jobs, three losing their lives and two now fighting to recover.
This tragedy has left the York County community shaken, serving as a sobering reminder of the risks law enforcement officers face every single day. And as investigations continue, the grief of this moment will undoubtedly echo for years to come.
