Canadiens’ Patrik Laine Sidelined After Core Muscle Surgery
It’s tough news for Montreal Canadiens fans — forward Patrik Laine will be out of action for quite some time. The team announced that Laine underwent surgery to repair a core muscle injury and is expected to miss around three to four months. The procedure was performed in New York by Dr. Mark Zoland, and while the surgery was reportedly successful, the recovery process is going to keep Laine off the ice for most of the season’s early stretch.
Laine, who’s just 27, has had a rather rocky run with injuries over the past few years, and unfortunately, this latest setback adds to that pattern. He’s been sidelined since October 16, after playing only five games this season, during which he managed to record a single assist while averaging about twelve and a half minutes of ice time per game. It’s especially disappointing given that he seemed poised to build on his previous season’s performance — where he scored 20 goals and 13 assists in 52 games, marking his first year with the Canadiens after joining the team in 2024.

Injuries have become an unwelcome theme in Laine’s recent career. Over the past four seasons, he’s appeared in just 181 out of a possible 328 games. Each time he starts to find his rhythm, another physical issue seems to pull him back. This current injury, a core muscle tear, is particularly tricky since it impacts movement, balance, and shooting power — all essential components of Laine’s dynamic offensive style.
For Montreal, this is a significant blow early in the campaign. The Canadiens have started the season at 6–3 and were set to face the Vancouver Canucks on Saturday night. Without Laine, the team will need to rely on depth and perhaps look to younger players or recent call-ups from Laval to fill the gap. Still, head coach Martin St. Louis and his staff will likely take a cautious approach, ensuring Laine doesn’t rush back too soon and risk aggravating the injury.
Fans will certainly miss seeing his trademark one-timer from the circle and his knack for finding open space in the offensive zone. But for now, the focus will be on recovery and rehabilitation. The hope is that, when he returns in a few months, Laine can regain full fitness and make a strong impact down the stretch — potentially becoming a key factor if the Canadiens are pushing for a playoff spot.
It’s never easy news when a player of Laine’s caliber goes down, but the Canadiens are keeping optimism alive, trusting that this surgery will finally put his lingering core issues behind him.
