Candy Bars Recalled Days Before Halloween Over Allergen Risk
Just days before Halloween, when candy sales are at their peak, a Michigan-based company has issued a recall that’s caught quite a bit of attention. Zingerman’s Candy Manufactory, located in Ann Arbor, has voluntarily recalled two of its popular candy bars due to the potential presence of undeclared nuts — a mistake that could pose a serious health risk to those with allergies.
According to a statement from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the affected products include the Peanut Butter Crush and Ca$hew Cow full-size bars. The Peanut Butter Crush bars may contain undeclared cashews, while the Ca$hew Cow bars may contain undeclared peanuts. Both products were distributed to retailers in Michigan and New York , making this a multi-state recall just ahead of one of the biggest candy-sharing holidays of the year.

The FDA emphasized that anyone with a peanut or cashew allergy should avoid consuming these products, as doing so could lead to serious or even life-threatening allergic reactions . The recalled bars are easily identifiable by their packaging — the Peanut Butter Crush bars come in purple and yellow 2-ounce boxes , while the Ca$hew Cow bars are sold in light blue and yellow 2-ounce boxes . Both carry the lot number 174250 printed on the label.
Zingerman’s Candy Manufactory traced the issue back to what it called a “temporary breakdown” in its production and packaging process. Essentially, something went wrong on the factory floor that allowed cross-contamination to occur between the peanut and cashew ingredients. The company stated that it has since taken corrective steps to ensure this problem doesn’t happen again.
Fortunately, no illnesses or allergic reactions have been reported so far in connection with the recall. Still, the FDA and the manufacturer are urging consumers who bought the affected candy bars to return them for a full refund .
The timing of this recall couldn’t be more striking — coming right before Halloween, when candy bars are exchanged, shared, and consumed in large quantities. It serves as a reminder for parents and consumers to always double-check ingredient labels, especially if allergies are a concern.
As of now, Zingerman’s has not issued an additional comment beyond the FDA announcement. However, the recall demonstrates how even a small production error can have serious consequences when it comes to food safety — particularly during a holiday that revolves around sweet treats.
