Charlotte FC Gears Up to Defend The Fortress Against NYCFC
It’s playoff time in Major League Soccer, and the spotlight is shining brightly on the Queen City. Charlotte FC is set to face New York City FC in the opening match of the Round One Best-of-Three series in the 2025 Audi MLS Cup Playoffs. The Bank of America Stadium — fondly called “The Fortress” — will be buzzing with energy as fans prepare to rally behind their team, waving rally towels and creating one of the most intimidating atmospheres in MLS.
Charlotte earned a top-four seed this season, which gives them the all-important home-field advantage. That’s huge, considering they’ve turned The Fortress into a real nightmare for visiting sides — boasting a league-best 13 home wins. Their first-ever playoff victory at home came in dramatic fashion last year, winning a nerve-racking 3–1 penalty shootout against Orlando City. That match set the tone for what Charlotte fans now proudly call their house — and they’re not planning on letting anyone take over their turf.

But this time around, The Crown will be slightly shorthanded. Key players Pep Biel and Wilfried Zaha are ruled out, leaving much of the attacking responsibility to Kerwin Vargas, Brandt Bronico, and rising star Idan Toklomati. Vargas has been electric this season with nine goal contributions, constantly driving the attack from the right flank. Bronico, meanwhile, is the engine in midfield — known for his relentless work rate and never-give-up attitude. Yet, it’s Toklomati who could truly make the difference. The young striker has already notched 11 goals and four assists, most of them coming since taking over as the team’s main forward. He’s the kind of player who doesn’t need much space — just one good chance — and he can make the opposition pay.
On the defensive end, Charlotte has been equally impressive. Their backline, led by goalkeeper Kristijan Kahlina — last year’s MLS Goalkeeper of the Year — has been rock solid. Kahlina led the league with 129 saves and recorded 12 clean sheets, matching his total from last season. The Crown have won 11 of their last 13 matches, including six shutouts in their past nine games. During that stretch, they even tied the league record for the longest win streak in MLS history.
Tuesday night’s clash is more than just a playoff opener — it’s a statement opportunity. The Fortress will be roaring, the Poznan will be in full swing, and the fans will make sure every NYCFC player feels the heat. Kickoff is set for 6:30 p.m., and supporters arriving early can grab a limited-edition “Crowns Up” rally towel.
Charlotte FC’s message couldn’t be clearer: protect The Fortress, defend the crown, and keep the dream alive in the 2025 MLS Cup Playoffs.
