Cole Caufield Shines Again as Canadiens Edge Kraken in Overtime

The Montreal Canadiens managed to escape Seattle with a thrilling 4–3 overtime win against the Kraken, thanks once again to Cole Caufield — the man who seems born for the spotlight. It was another late-night moment that felt almost cinematic, as Caufield, nicknamed “Mr. Overtime” by fans and teammates alike, delivered his magic just 44 seconds into extra time.

It wasn’t just any goal. Caufield found a narrow opening, banking the puck off Kraken goalie Joey Daccord’s leg pad to seal the victory. That quick strike not only gave Montreal two valuable points but also secured Caufield’s place in the Canadiens’ record books. With this goal, he now leads franchise history in overtime winners — 11 in total — surpassing legends Howie Morenz and Max Pacioretty. At just 24 years old, that’s an incredible feat.

The game itself was a roller coaster. Montreal built what looked like a comfortable 3–0 lead midway through the third period, only to see it crumble as Seattle clawed back. Brandon Montour, who seems to save his best performances for games against Montreal, scored twice to bring the Kraken right back into it, including a late equalizer that sent the matchup to overtime. Shane Wright also found the net, giving the home crowd hope of a comeback win.

But then came Caufield’s heroics. As captain Nick Suzuki described afterward, “He always wants the puck on his stick in overtime — and when he gets it, you just know something’s going to happen.” Suzuki had quite the game himself, collecting three assists, while Juraj Slafkovsky and Alex Newhook added power-play goals earlier in the night.

The Canadiens’ young goalie, Jakub Dobes, played a steady game, stopping 18 of 21 shots and showing poise even as Seattle surged late. The win capped off a strong Western road trip for the team, who went 3–1–0 across four games against the Flames, Canucks, Oilers, and Kraken. The only blemish came in Edmonton, where they surrendered a lead in a 6–5 loss — a mistake they nearly repeated in Seattle.

Head coach Martin St-Louis remained composed, joking after the game that it was “the perfect scenario for a coach — you get the win, but you still have lessons to learn.” And he’s right. Montreal’s penalty issues and third-period lapses remain a concern, but the resilience and chemistry of their young core continue to impress.

With this victory, the Canadiens return home on a high note, ready to face the Ottawa Senators next. And as for Caufield — well, every time the game’s on the line, you can almost feel it coming. The puck finds him, the crowd holds its breath, and more often than not, “Mr. Overtime” delivers.
