Domi’s Late Heroics Lift Maple Leafs Over Flames in Thrilling Finish
What a night it turned out to be at Scotiabank Arena, as Max Domi — yes, the former Canadiens forward — delivered his best performance yet in a Toronto Maple Leafs jersey. After a slow start to the season, where he had managed just one goal through nine games, Domi exploded with two crucial goals, including the late game-winner that sealed a 4–3 victory over the Calgary Flames.
With just over two minutes left in regulation, John Tavares made a slick steal from MacKenzie Weegar and found Matthew Knies, who quickly slid the puck across to Domi. Positioned perfectly in the right face-off circle, Domi fired home the decisive shot, breaking the 3–3 deadlock and sending the home crowd into a frenzy.
What’s even more interesting is that Domi wasn’t even supposed to be on for that shift. Toronto head coach Craig Berube rewarded him with extra ice time because of how well he had been playing all night — and that decision paid off big time.

Domi, staying humble after the win, said it best: “We won today, so nothing else matters, man. Individual stuff is irrelevant — it’s a long season and everyone needs to step up when it’s their turn.”
Alongside Domi, young forward Matthew Knies was brilliant as well, netting two goals and adding an assist. Goaltender Anthony Stolarz also had a solid night, making 26 saves to help Toronto notch their second consecutive win and move to a 5–4–1 record on the season.
Calgary, on the other hand, had its moments early on. Samuel Honzek scored his first NHL goal, while Morgan Frost and Joel Farabee also found the net. But despite a strong start, the Flames struggled to maintain momentum, especially after penalty trouble in the first period. Coach Ryan Huska admitted afterward that the team’s puck movement out of their zone caused major issues, saying, “That’s where we got ourselves into the most problems.”
The game itself was full of back-and-forth drama. The Flames jumped ahead early, but Domi tied it up in the second period with a gorgeous high-glove finish. Knies then gave Toronto the lead in the third with a power-play goal, only for Honzek to level it again late — setting the stage for Domi’s heroics.
For Domi, this performance could mark a real turning point. He’s now up to three goals in ten games, and after a sluggish start, he’s finally starting to look like the player Toronto was hoping to see. Considering his history with the Canadiens — including a career-best 72-point season back in 2018–19 — Leafs fans are surely hoping this is just the beginning of another strong run.
In the end, the night belonged to Domi. His effort, energy, and clutch scoring reminded everyone of what he’s capable of when he’s fully engaged — and it couldn’t have come at a better time for Toronto.
