Dundee United Snatch Dramatic Late Win Over St Mirren
What a rollercoaster of a match we saw at Tannadice Park on Saturday! Dundee United managed to snatch a thrilling 3-1 victory over St Mirren, but it was a finish that left everyone on the edge of their seats. The game had everything: early drama, goalkeeping errors, and a late flurry that completely changed the outcome.
The action started early with St Mirren taking the lead in the 18th minute. A rare mistake from United’s goalkeeper Yevhen Kucherenko allowed Dan Nlundulu to nod the ball into the top corner from close range. It looked like United were in trouble, but they quickly responded just before halftime. St Mirren’s own goalkeeper, Shamal George, handled the ball outside his area, and from the resulting free-kick, Zac Sapsford expertly fired low past the wall into the corner to level things up. By halftime, it was 1-1, and the game had been marked by two surprising errors between the posts rather than flowing football.

The second half saw St Mirren dominate proceedings. They created plenty of chances, took 13 corners, and had a total of 25 shots, though only three found the target. Dundee United, meanwhile, struggled to impose themselves in the middle of the park, and for much of the match, it seemed like St Mirren might just hold on for the win. But football has a funny way of turning on its head, and the final minutes delivered all the drama fans could hope for.
With just six minutes remaining, a VAR review changed the complexion of the game. St Mirren’s Alex Gogic was sent off for a late challenge on Nikolaj Moeller, reducing the visitors to ten men. From the resulting penalty, substitute Amar Fatah calmly converted to put United ahead for the first time. The finishing touch came in the dying seconds when Craig Sibbald, who had impressed with a long-range strike last week at Ibrox, curled home a beautiful third goal, sealing the comeback and sending the home fans into jubilation.
Manager Jim Goodwin praised his players for standing firm in defense and grinding out the result. “Sometimes the result is more important than the performance,” he said, noting how physical and challenging St Mirren made it for his side. On the other hand, St Mirren manager Stephen Robinson admitted his frustration. Despite dominating large parts of the match, the team failed to convert their superiority into a win. “Decisions change the game,” he reflected, pointing to key moments that swung the match in Dundee United’s favor.
This result lifts Dundee United into third place in the Scottish Premiership, while St Mirren will need to regroup quickly as they face league leaders Hearts at home and a League Cup semi-final against Motherwell next week. For United, a trip to Motherwell on Wednesday awaits before another tough test at Tynecastle. For both sides, it’s a huge week ahead, but for now, it’s Dundee United celebrating a late, dramatic triumph in front of 8,843 fans at Tannadice Park.
