Jack Hughes Shines in Overtime as Devils Edge Avalanche for 8th Straight Win
What a night it was in Newark, as the New Jersey Devils continued their remarkable run with an eighth straight victory — this time a thrilling 4-3 overtime win over the Colorado Avalanche. Jack Hughes, the heart and soul of this Devils squad, once again proved why he’s one of the league’s most electric players, scoring twice, including the game-winner just 1:53 into overtime.
It all started when defenseman Simon Nemec made a smart play by recovering a loose puck in the offensive zone and finding Hughes waiting in the right face-off circle. Hughes faked once, then ripped a quick shot right into the top corner, sealing the win and sending the home crowd into a frenzy. Speaking after the game, Hughes credited Nemec for setting up the play, saying it was all about being in the right spot at the right time and reacting fast.
Nemec, who’s quickly earning recognition for his composure and vision, had three assists on the night, while goaltender Jake Allen made 21 saves to help New Jersey maintain their hot streak. This marks the tenth time in franchise history the Devils have won at least eight straight — their first such run since 2022.

Despite the win, it wasn’t all smooth sailing for New Jersey. The team was forced to play most of the game with just five defensemen after Brett Pesce left in the first period due to an upper-body injury. Coach Sheldon Keefe praised Luke Hughes and Nemec for stepping up under pressure, highlighting how their skating and decision-making helped the Devils handle Colorado’s aggressive attack.
For the Avalanche, frustration continues to build. They’ve now dropped four straight games, including three in overtime or shootouts. Nathan MacKinnon and Valeri Nichushkin both scored, while Brock Nelson tied it late in regulation, but it wasn’t enough to hold off the relentless Devils. Goalie Trent Miner faced a tough night, making 20 saves against one of the NHL’s most explosive offenses.
The Devils once again showed how dangerous they are when striking early — they’ve scored first in all eight of their victories this season. Arseny Gritsyuk opened the scoring in the first, followed by Hughes’ first goal just 39 seconds later. Even when Colorado battled back to tie it twice, New Jersey’s energy and composure never wavered.
With this win, Jack Hughes moved past Scott Niedermayer for second on the Devils’ all-time list in overtime goals, trailing only Patrik Elias. The Devils also became just the second team in NHL history to win eight straight after losing their season opener.
Next up, the Devils hit the road — and fittingly, their trip begins in Colorado. It’ll be another test of endurance, altitude, and momentum, but if their recent form is any indication, this team isn’t slowing down anytime soon.
