Jesse Edwards Married and Heading to Australia for NBL Season
Jesse Edwards, the towering Dutch basketball centre, has had a whirlwind year, achieving two of life’s biggest milestones in rapid succession. In August, Edwards married his longtime partner, Quirine Edwards-Comans, in a small and intimate ceremony with just their closest family in attendance. Remarkably, this joyful occasion took place just one day before he boarded a plane to Australia to begin his season with Melbourne United in the NBL. Despite the rush, Edwards and Quirine have promised themselves a bigger celebration back home in the Netherlands to properly honor their union.
The couple’s love story traces back to college in the United States, where Edwards was playing for Syracuse. Even though they grew up only 30 minutes apart in the Netherlands, it was their time at college that brought them together. Edwards proposed in mid-June, and the pair quickly decided that an early wedding would simplify their international move. With a small wedding of just 10 to 15 guests, the day was described as “really small, but really good,” and both embraced the practicality of combining life changes with a major career step.

At 213 centimeters tall, Edwards’ physical presence on the court is hard to miss, and his 226-centimeter wingspan makes him a formidable force in the paint. Despite the chaos of a short engagement and an international move, he has thrived in Melbourne. So far this season, he has averaged 12.6 points and 8.5 rebounds per game, helping Melbourne United to an undefeated start in their campaign. Edwards described the past few months as “the most I’ve ever done in such a short time, but it was a lot of fun.”
Before joining Melbourne, Edwards spent time on a two-way contract with the Minnesota Timberwolves, playing mostly in the G-League for Iowa and appearing in two NBA games. Becoming the third Dutch player to make his NBA debut last season was a dream come true, but Edwards’ eyes are set firmly on returning to the league full-time. His time with Melbourne United is being used strategically to improve his physicality, rebounding, defensive skills, and shooting, all while continuing to enjoy life in Australia.
Choosing Melbourne United over more lucrative European offers highlights Edwards’ long-term vision. The NBL has become a known pathway to the NBA, with stars like Jock Landale, Jack White, and Luke Travers previously making the leap. Edwards is eager to follow in their footsteps, confident that his time in Melbourne will help him reach the next stage of his career. His coach, Dean Vickerman, praised Edwards’ potential, noting that there are many “levels to his game” yet to be unlocked.
