Kompany Unshaken as Bayern Chase 14th Straight Win Against Cologne

Bayern Munich head coach Vincent Kompany has made it clear — pressure doesn’t faze him. Ahead of their German Cup second-round clash against FC Cologne, Kompany appeared calm and confident, saying he actually enjoys the kind of tension that comes with high-stakes football. For him, pressure is part of the rhythm that drives great performances.

Speaking at Tuesday’s press conference, Kompany said, “I always like it when we’ve got a bit of pressure. That’s never had a bad impact on my team. When the performance is right, we always have a big chance of winning.” And that mindset seems to be working — Bayern have made a perfect start to the season, winning all 13 of their matches across competitions so far. Their most recent triumph, a 3–0 victory over Borussia Mönchengladbach, kept them on top of the Bundesliga with a maximum 24 points from eight games. That run even matches the best-ever season start in Europe’s top five leagues — a record previously held by AC Milan from the 1992/93 season.

Now, Bayern turn their attention to the DFB-Pokal, a tournament they’ve historically dominated with 20 titles but haven’t won since 2020. In fact, the club has been knocked out in the second round three times over the past five seasons — a statistic Kompany is determined to change. “The desire to be in a Cup final doesn’t just come from the fans but also from us,” he explained, emphasizing the hunger within the squad.

This week is a busy one for Bayern. After the midweek Cup tie in Cologne, they’ll face Bayer Leverkusen in a crucial Bundesliga encounter on Saturday, followed by a high-profile Champions League showdown with Paris Saint-Germain next Tuesday. Still, Kompany insists the focus remains fixed on one game at a time. “We are doing a lot of things right at the moment and we have to take this into the next game,” he said, adding that Cologne’s defensive discipline deserves respect. “They play with a lot of urgency, and since they’re at home, they have every right to believe in their chances. But we’re very hungry for this Cup.”

Goalkeeper Manuel Neuer will miss the game due to suspension, meaning former Cologne player Jonas Urbig will start between the posts. Kompany praised the young keeper’s development, noting, “He’s shown he’s at a very high level at a young age. With Manuel Neuer, Sven Ulreich, and our goalkeeping team guiding him, it’s the perfect path for him right now.”

As Bayern look to extend their winning streak to 14 games and keep their flawless record alive, the team’s determination seems as strong as ever. For Kompany and his players, the goal is clear — not just to win, but to remind everyone that Bayern Munich remain the gold standard of German football.
