Lando Norris Takes the F1 Championship Lead After Stunning Mexico City Win

The Formula 1 championship battle has taken a dramatic twist after Lando Norris’ flawless performance at the 2025 Mexico City Grand Prix. The McLaren driver not only dominated the race from start to finish but also dethroned his own teammate, Oscar Piastri, from the top of the drivers’ standings — by just a single point.

For 189 days, Piastri had been the one everyone was chasing. He’d grown comfortable as the hunted, even saying earlier this season that being in that position meant you were “doing something right.” But in Mexico, the tables turned. Norris, determined and sharp, became the hunter who finally caught his target.

The race at the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez, sitting more than two kilometers above sea level, is notorious for its tricky conditions and high-speed drama. Yet, Norris made it look effortless. Starting from pole, he nailed the launch, controlled every lap, and crossed the line with an incredible 32-second lead — his 10th career victory and sixth of the season. It was a performance of pure precision and calm execution.

Meanwhile, Oscar Piastri had a far more complicated day. After qualifying in eighth — and moving up one spot only because of a grid penalty to Carlos Sainz — his race got off to a rough start. He slipped back to ninth on the opening lap and spent much of the race fighting through heavy traffic and turbulent air. Despite managing to climb back to fifth, it wasn’t enough to defend his slim championship lead.

Piastri later admitted the weekend had exposed some challenges. He mentioned struggling with “dirty air” and hinted that his driving style had needed some adjustments over the past few rounds. “It’s been a little strange to get my head around,” he said, adding that his car or tires had recently required a very different approach. Still, he remained optimistic, focusing on learning from the experience rather than letting frustration take over.

Behind the McLaren duo, Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc secured a hard-fought second place, narrowly holding off Max Verstappen in third. The Dutchman, who remains just 35 points behind Piastri in the standings, is still in striking range for another championship push. And let’s not forget rookie Oliver Bearman — the 20-year-old Haas driver impressed everyone by finishing fourth, earning the best result of his young career.

As it stands, Norris leads the championship with Piastri breathing down his neck, and Verstappen lurking close behind. With only four races remaining, the fight for the title is tighter than ever. What began as a McLaren duel has now evolved into a three-way showdown — one that could go right down to the wire under the dazzling lights of Abu Dhabi.

For now, Norris holds the upper hand, but as Formula 1 has shown time and again — in this sport, the hunter and the hunted can swap places in the blink of an eye.
