Netflix’s The Witcher has finally returned for its much-anticipated fourth season, but this time, there’s a new White Wolf roaming the Continent. After Henry Cavill’s departure, Australian actor Liam Hemsworth has officially taken up the sword as Geralt of Rivia — a change that’s stirred both curiosity and skepticism among fans.

For many viewers, Cavill was Geralt — his deep voice, commanding presence, and obvious love for the fantasy source material made him an almost perfect fit. So when he announced in 2022 that he was “passing the torch” to Hemsworth, fans were understandably hesitant. Cavill’s departure reportedly came down to creative differences, as he often emphasized staying loyal to author Andrzej Sapkowski’s original books. Since leaving, Cavill has moved on to star and produce Amazon’s Warhammer 40,000 series, calling it his dream project.

But now, the focus has shifted to Hemsworth, who admits stepping into Cavill’s boots is “daunting.” To ease the transition, The Witcher

Showrunner Lauren Schmidt Hissrich explained that they even re-shot some of Cavill’s most pivotal scenes with Hemsworth, aiming to help audiences see the new Geralt as the same character in spirit, though embodied by a different actor. “We wanted to not dance around the fact that this is a new human being,” she said. “By the end of Episode 1, we wanted viewers to see Geralt, not the actor.”

Reactions, of course, have been mixed. Variety called Season 4 an “upgrade,” while The Guardian wasn’t so kind, describing Hemsworth as “as charismatic as a bollard in a wig.” Still, others — like Metro ’s Sabrina Barr — have praised him for doing a “brave and solid job,” urging fans to give the new season a chance rather than judge it on nostalgia alone.

Even some fans who attended early screenings agreed the transition was “handled well.” Content creator Dawson Roberts said, “Losing Henry Cavill is tough, but Liam does a really solid job. You get used to it quickly — he’s got the right energy.”

And yes, there are familiar faces and new ones too. Laurence Fishburne joins the cast as Regis, a vampire companion, while Anya Chalotra (Yennefer) and Freya Allan (Ciri) continue their respective arcs — though separated from Geralt for much of the season.

So, does Hemsworth manage to escape Cavill’s shadow? Maybe not entirely. But as the story evolves and fans adjust, Season 4 proves that The Witcher is determined to keep its saga alive — reminding us that legends, just like actors, can be reborn.
