Madagascar’s Ex-President Stripped of Citizenship Amid Political Upheaval
In a dramatic turn of events in Madagascar, former President Andry Rajoelina has officially been stripped of his Malagash citizenship. This decision comes in the wake of his recent ousting and follows weeks of political unrest that shook the island nation. According to local reports, the decree citing the loss of citizenship is grounded in a Malagasy law stating that any citizen who voluntarily acquires a foreign nationality automatically forfeits their original nationality. In Rajoelina’s case, he had acquired French nationality in 2014, a fact that has now become a central element in the political and legal consequences he faces.
Rajoelina, who is currently in hiding, fled Madagascar on October 11 after a mutiny by the CAPSAT military unit, which joined forces with protesters demanding his departure. The political vacuum was quickly filled by Colonel Michaël Randrianirina, who was sworn in as the new president on October 14 in Antananarivo, promising elections within two years. While Rajoelina has remained silent about his exact whereabouts, some sources suggest he may have transited through La Réunion and is currently in Dubai. His prior residence in Sauverny, a village in France’s Pays de Gex region, and the issuance of a French passport in 2015, have also fueled international intrigue surrounding his escape.
