Pauline McLynn Shakes Up Coronation Street as the New Rovers Landlady
It’s official — the Rovers Return has a brand-new owner, and it’s none other than comedy legend Pauline McLynn. Best known for her unforgettable role as Mrs. Doyle in Father Ted , Pauline is stepping into the world of Coronation Street as Maggie Driscoll, a character who’s already stirring things up in Weatherfield.
Pauline’s arrival marks one of the most exciting new chapters in the ITV soap’s recent history. She joins the show alongside Aaron McCusker, who plays her on-screen son Ben, and Catherine Tyldesley, reprising her role as Eva Price. Together, they form the Driscoll family — the latest clan to take over the cobbles’ most iconic pub, the Rovers Return.

Speaking about her new role, Pauline shared with The Sun that Maggie isn’t exactly the quiet type. She described her as a woman who loves to push boundaries — often just to see what happens. “Maggie likes to throw in the most outrageous things just to see how far she can go,” she explained with a laugh. “And when people react, she’ll just shrug and say, ‘What’s the fuss about?’ She’s the Mammy, so she thinks she can get away with it all!”
It’s soon revealed that Maggie is not just helping out behind the bar — she’s the real boss. Although Eva Price initially believes she’s the landlady, her world is turned upside down when Maggie arrives and drops the bombshell that she actually owns the place. Ben, it turns out, had borrowed money from his mother to buy the pub, meaning Maggie technically holds the keys to the Rovers.
From that moment, tensions rise. Both Eva and Maggie are determined to run things their own way — and neither is backing down. In one hilarious moment, their clash plays out over something as simple as a Halloween party. Eva wants a classy Agatha Christie-themed event, while Maggie insists on a full-on spooky bash, complete with toilet paper mummy games and the Monster Mash. It’s the kind of comic chaos that Corrie fans love.
Despite the rivalry, both Pauline McLynn and Catherine Tyldesley have said that deep down, their characters have more in common than they’d like to admit. Pauline even joked that if Maggie and Eva weren’t mother- and daughter-in-law, they’d probably be best friends.
Behind the scenes, Coronation Street producer Kate Brooks couldn’t be happier about the new arrivals. “The Driscolls do not arrive quietly,” she teased. “Expect big drama, explosive secrets, and a lot of laughs. Having actors like Catherine, Aaron, and Pauline together is a dream.”
