Podkolzin’s Late Heroics Lift Oilers Past Canadiens in Wild 6–5 Comeback
What a night of hockey it was in Edmonton — the kind that keeps fans on the edge of their seats until the very last second. The Edmonton Oilers staged a thrilling comeback to defeat the Montreal Canadiens 6–5, capped off by a dramatic late winner from Vasily Podkolzin.
With just over a minute left on the clock, Podkolzin, who hadn’t scored yet this season, found the back of the net with a beautiful backhand shot past Montreal goalie Sam Montembeault. The crowd inside Rogers Place erupted as the Oilers completed an impressive rally from a two-goal deficit late in the third period.
It was a game that had everything — speed, skill, and plenty of goals. Montreal had looked well in control earlier in the third, leading 5–3 thanks to standout performances from Cole Caufield and Alex Newhook, who each scored twice. Josh Anderson also added one for the Canadiens, giving them what felt like a comfortable cushion.

But Edmonton wasn’t ready to fold. Leon Draisaitl and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins struck back with two quick power-play goals, just 58 seconds apart, to level the score at five apiece. The energy in the building shifted completely at that point, and the momentum swung firmly in the Oilers’ favor.
Earlier in the night, Edmonton had also seen goals from David Tomasek, Adam Henrique, and Andrew Mangiapane. Calvin Pickard made 22 saves to hold off a dangerous Canadiens offense that was coming off a 2–1 overtime win in Calgary just the night before.
On the Montreal side, Montembeault turned aside 23 shots but faced relentless pressure in the final minutes as Edmonton’s top players pushed hard for the go-ahead goal. Canadiens coach Martin St-Louis summed it up best afterward — his team lost, but they were not truly beaten. It was a game decided by a few key moments rather than a lack of effort.
For Edmonton fans, this win could mark a turning point after a slow start to the season. The chemistry between McDavid, Draisaitl, and the supporting cast seemed to click just when it mattered most. And for Podkolzin, netting that late game-winner will no doubt be a confidence booster moving forward.
Next up, the Oilers will head to Seattle to face the Kraken on Saturday night, while the Canadiens continue their Western road trip with a stop in Vancouver.
It was a game full of momentum swings, clutch plays, and high emotion — a perfect reminder of why hockey nights in Canada are always something special.
