Steve Martin has once again proven that his artistic brilliance knows no bounds. Known to most as a comedy legend and film icon, Martin continues to carve out an impressive musical legacy — this time alongside fellow banjo virtuoso Alison Brown. The two recently took the stage on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon to perform their lively instrumental track “Let’s Get Out of Here,” and the performance was pure joy from start to finish.

With banjos leading the way and a few string musicians backing them, the duo delivered a performance that perfectly captured their chemistry and musical playfulness. “Let’s Get Out of Here” isn’t just another tune — it’s the closing track on their new album, Safe, Sensible and Sane , which was released earlier this month. The project marks their first collaborative album and features an impressive lineup of guest artists including Jackson Browne, Vince Gill, Jason Mraz, Tim O’Brien, the Indigo Girls, and Della Mae. The entire album was recorded live at Compass Sound Studio in Nashville, giving it a warm, organic sound that feels refreshingly timeless.

In an interview about the album, Martin reflected on his connection to the banjo, saying that both he and Brown are drawn to its “melodic and melancholy aspects.” He explained that they spent days simply playing together before realizing they’d stumbled upon something worth recording. Brown added that the album wasn’t planned at first — it simply grew out of the fun they were having creating music together. “We didn’t start off saying, ‘Let’s make an album,’” she said. “But after a while, we realized we’d made enough music to tie it all together. There was so much joy and ease in the process.”

That joy clearly resonated with listeners. Safe, Sensible and Sane debuted at No. 1 on Billboard’s Top Bluegrass Albums chart — Martin’s seventh chart-topper in the genre. For someone once known primarily for his comedy and acting, that’s a remarkable achievement. Since his bluegrass debut in 2009 with The Crow: New Songs for the Five-String Banjo , Martin has spent a total of 84 weeks atop the bluegrass charts — more than any other male solo artist.

All of this success has come while Martin remains deeply involved in his hit Hulu series Only Murders in the Building , which he co-created and stars in alongside Martin Short and Selena Gomez. With the show’s fifth season currently streaming and a sixth one headed to London, Martin seems to be balancing his comedy, acting, and musical passions effortlessly.

At 80, Steve Martin continues to be a creative force — blending humor, heart, and harmony in a way that few artists ever could. Whether he’s making audiences laugh or moving them through music, one thing’s clear: he’s not slowing down anytime soon.
