Afridi Calls on Pakistan to Maintain Momentum Ahead of Sri Lanka ODIs

Pakistan’s newly-appointed ODI captain Shaheen Afridi has sent a clear message to his team ahead of their three-match series against Sri Lanka, urging them to carry forward the winning momentum they gained from their recent success against South Africa. The series is set to begin in Rawalpindi on Tuesday, and Afridi wants his side to continue performing as a united, consistent unit.

This marks Afridi’s first series in charge of Pakistan’s ODI team, and he made a strong start by leading the side to a narrow 2-1 series victory over the Proteas. The triumph was a welcome boost for Pakistan, especially after a disappointing campaign at the ICC Champions Trophy earlier this year on home soil. Afridi emphasized the importance of building on this momentum and improving as a team in every aspect of the game.

“The series win against South Africa in Faisalabad was a great boost for our confidence,” Afridi said. “It was my first series as ODI captain, and I was really proud of the way the players responded to different situations and played as a unit. The energy, intent, and teamwork were outstanding.” He added that the focus now is to carry that winning streak forward and to ensure that consistency becomes a hallmark of Pakistan’s performances.

Afridi also stressed that responsibility for success should be shared across the squad. “All the players should take responsibility,” he said. “It’s not just Shaheen, Fakhar, Babar, or Saim’s job. We all should do our best. We should support those who are not performing and always believe that we can succeed as a team.”

Sri Lanka enter the series in good form themselves, having recently swept Zimbabwe 2-0 in their ODI contests, thanks in part to an outstanding performance from experienced batter Pathum Nissanka. Sri Lanka captain Charith Asalanka acknowledged the challenge of playing in Pakistan but expressed confidence in his side’s preparation and recent performances.

Pakistan’s squad for the series includes prominent names like Babar Azam, Fakhar Zaman, Mohammad Rizwan, and Haris Rauf, while Sri Lanka will be led by Asalanka with players such as Nissanka, Wanindu Hasaranga, and Maheesh Theekshana in their ranks. The three ODIs will take place in Rawalpindi on November 11, 13, and 15.

With both teams eager to assert dominance, Afridi’s message underlines the need for focus, teamwork, and continued improvement. Pakistan’s fans will be hoping that their side can maintain the energy and spirit that brought them victory against South Africa, and that this series can mark the beginning of a strong, consistent run in 50-over cricket.
