The first trailer for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie has been released, giving fans a glimpse of the action-packed sequel set to hit U.S. theaters on April 3, 2026, courtesy of Illumination and Universal. The movie picks up where the original left off, bringing back our favorite heroes Mario and Luigi, voiced once again by Chris Pratt and Charlie Day, alongside Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach and Jack Black reprising his role as Bowser. The sequel introduces some exciting new additions to the voice cast. Brie Larson has been announced as Princess Rosalina, while Benny Safdie takes on the role of Bowser Jr., adding a fresh dynamic to the film’s villain lineup. Fans of the games will recognize Bowser Jr.’s magical paintbrush, which is used like a flail and gives him some seriously creative powers, while Rosalina showcases her own abilities, taking down a spider-like robot with her magical wand. The story promises to capture the magic of the original 2007 Nintendo game Super Mario Galaxy , as Mario and friends travel through different planets, from watery worlds to desert landscapes with upside-down pyramids, just like in the games.
The film is being directed by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic, with Matthew Fogel returning to write the screenplay. Universal Pictures and Nintendo are co-financing the project, and distribution will be handled worldwide by Universal. The producers, Chris Melendandri and Nintendo legend Shigeru Miyamoto, are back on board, ensuring the sequel stays true to the beloved video game franchise.
The first Super Mario Bros. Movie , released in 2023, was a massive hit, grossing $1.36 billion worldwide and becoming the third-highest-grossing animated film ever. The sequel is expected to bring the same energy, charm, and cosmic adventure to the big screen. The trailer itself shows Mario and Luigi facing off against Bowser Jr., witnessing shooting stars streaking across the sky, and heading to space on a thrilling interplanetary adventure.
For fans of the franchise, the combination of returning characters, new voices like Benny Safdie and Brie Larson, and interstellar adventures promises a sequel that will be both visually stunning and packed with action. The excitement around The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is already building, and it looks like the Mushroom Kingdom is about to get even bigger. This one’s shaping up to be a must-watch when it launches in April 2026.
