Canadiens Lose to Blue Jackets in Shootout after Late Comeback
The Montreal Canadiens' tough stretch continues with their fourth consecutive loss, as they fell to the Columbus Blue Jackets 4-3 in a shootout. Despite an exciting third-period comeback, Montreal couldn’t seal the deal, and the game ended in a shootout loss at Nationwide Arena.
The game started off poorly for the Canadiens, but head coach Martin St. Louis made a bold move by breaking up his top line for the first time this season, a decision that paid off in the long run. Young players like Juraj Slafkovsky and Ivan Demidov showed significant development, proving that they are ready to take on bigger roles. From the start, they stopped deferring to veterans and began playing with more confidence.
Slafkovsky, in particular, impressed with his play on the Canadiens’ first goal. He carried the puck through the offensive zone, holding onto it with confidence instead of passing it off. A remarkable 360-degree spin move gave him the space needed to set up the play, leading to a great assist. Demidov was equally impressive, making smart decisions and contributing offensively. Together with Oliver Kapanen, these young players displayed the kind of chemistry that the Canadiens need for their future success.
Kapanen was the one to capitalize, scoring his seventh goal of the season from a soft spot in the slot. While the expected highlight of the night was supposed to come from Zach Bolduc stepping into the first line, it was Slafkovsky and Demidov who truly shone, signaling that they are ready for bigger roles moving forward.

Another standout was Lane Hutson, who made an impact with both a goal and an assist. When Hutson was on the ice, the Canadiens dominated, outshooting the Blue Jackets 34-8 in regulation. Hutson’s wrist shot late in the third period helped tie the game, with Slafkovsky providing the screen. Together, they ensured that the game went into overtime, giving the Canadiens a fighting chance to secure the win.
Unfortunately, overtime did not go their way, and despite some strong chances, including Demidov’s missed one-timer, the Canadiens couldn’t get the decisive goal. The Blue Jackets held on, and the Canadiens ultimately lost in the shootout.
For Montreal, this season is about developing young talent, and while the losses are frustrating, there are positives to take from games like this. The team has a lot of potential, and players like Slafkovsky, Demidov, and Hutson are key to their long-term success.
The Canadiens have faced numerous challenges this month, including significant injuries to key players like Kirby Dach, Kaiden Guhle, and Alex Newhook. With these players sidelined, the Canadiens have been forced to rely on younger players and less experienced members of the roster. This has made it more difficult to compete at a high level, but it also offers valuable learning experiences.
As they continue through this rebuilding phase, the Canadiens remain one of the youngest teams in the NHL. They’ve shown promise in their development, but the road to success won’t be smooth. With the right guidance and time, the team will emerge stronger, but for now, patience is key.
Despite the frustrations, the Canadiens' rebuild is on track. Injuries, struggles, and setbacks are all part of the process, and while it might be tough right now, there are brighter days ahead. The team’s future remains full of potential, and as long as they continue to grow and develop, the losses of today will help them succeed tomorrow.
