Celtics Secure Baylor Scheierman’s Future with Team Option for 2026–27
The Boston Celtics have officially locked in another piece of their future by exercising the team option on Baylor Scheierman’s contract for the 2026–27 NBA season. The move, first reported by Michael Scotto of HoopsHype and later confirmed by MassLive , ensures that the promising young forward remains part of the Celtics’ plans for at least another year. The deal is valued at $2.74 million, a cost-effective decision for a player still developing his role within one of the league’s top rosters.

Boston faced a Friday deadline to finalize the decision, and while it wasn’t entirely unexpected, it signals confidence from the front office — led by Brad Stevens — in Scheierman’s long-term potential. The 25-year-old was selected 30th overall in the 2024 NBA Draft and entered the league with a reputation as a sharp shooter and creative playmaker. Standing at 6-foot-6 and weighing 205 pounds, he’s the kind of versatile wing Boston has been keen to develop behind All-Stars Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown.
Despite limited minutes early this season — averaging around eight and a half per game — Scheierman has shown flashes of value on both ends of the floor. Head coach Joe Mazzulla recently highlighted the forward’s defensive effort, particularly during a win over the Cavaliers where Scheierman held his own guarding star guard Donovan Mitchell. Mazzulla praised his execution, emphasizing the importance of having 11 or 12 guys who can contribute effectively within the system.
Scheierman himself hasn’t seemed fazed by the uncertainty leading up to the decision. Speaking to MassLive after the Cavaliers game, he remained calm and focused, saying, “I’m just focused on what we’ve got tomorrow and that’s about it. I’m not too focused on that. I feel very confident about what’s to come.”
Financially, the decision makes plenty of sense for Boston. With massive contracts already committed to Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown, maintaining low-cost deals like Scheierman’s gives the Celtics the flexibility they need to balance the roster. Alongside young players such as Josh Minott, Jordan Walsh, and Hugo Gonzalez, Scheierman represents part of the team’s depth-building strategy for future seasons.
While he’s yet to establish himself as a consistent rotation player, Scheierman’s shooting and effort on defense make him a valuable developmental piece. The Celtics clearly believe his ceiling hasn’t been reached yet — and for just under $3 million, it’s a low-risk investment in potential. As Boston continues its pursuit of another championship, Scheierman’s role may grow quietly but steadily, with the organization banking on his ability to provide reliable bench depth in the years ahead.
