CFP Rankings Set the Stage for a Wild Week 14

So, the latest College Football Playoff rankings have just been released, and even though Week 13 didn’t shake things up much, the new bracket has definitely added some clarity — and a whole lot of anticipation — heading into Week 14. It feels like we’re finally seeing the playoff picture come into focus, even if several big matchups still have the potential to blow everything wide open.

As expected, Ohio State held onto the No. 1 spot. The Buckeyes stayed right where they’ve been, and now the pressure is fully on them as they prepare to face Michigan. That game is essentially a must-win if they want to secure their trip to the Big Ten title game. Indiana remained at No. 2, keeping their perfect record intact and positioning themselves as the likely opponent if Ohio State takes care of business.

Texas A&M, still unbeaten, stayed firmly in the No. 3 slot. A win against Texas this weekend would lock them into the SEC Championship Game, so their path is still completely wide open. Georgia and Texas Tech round out the top five, with both teams sitting at 10-1 and waiting to see how the chaos above them shakes out.

One minor shift took place in the second half of the top 10. Oregon bumped up to No. 6, but the Ducks immediately face a tough challenge with a road game at Washington. Mississippi slid to No. 7 as they get ready for a heated rivalry matchup against Mississippi State. Oklahoma, sitting eighth, just needs to survive LSU to complete their brutal SEC stretch. Meanwhile, Notre Dame and Alabama closed out the top 10, with the Crimson Tide now preparing for their annual showdown against Auburn — a game that never seems to behave predictably.

Just outside that top group, BYU, Miami, Utah, Vanderbilt, and Michigan are lurking. BYU still controls its Big 12 destiny, while the rest are hoping for the right combination of upsets and stumbles to crack the bracket. Miami’s positioning is especially interesting because they beat Notre Dame earlier in the season but remain three spots behind the Irish. Their upcoming game against No. 22 Pittsburgh might give them the push they need — or it could knock Notre Dame out of the conversation entirely.

Things are also getting clearer in the race for the Group of Five’s automatic bid. Tulane stayed at No. 24, still the only ranked team from that set of contenders. If both Tulane and North Texas win this weekend, they’ll meet for the American Conference title — a scenario that would probably leave James Madison without a path, especially since they won’t face a ranked opponent in the Sun Belt final.

This was the fourth of five Thursday rankings releases, with the next one set for December 2 after Week 14 wraps up. And then comes the big one — the full playoff field will be revealed on December 7. With so many rivalry games and championship spots on the line, the stage is set for a dramatic, possibly chaotic, finish to the regular season.
