Costco’s Holiday Hours and What to Expect This Black Friday
Thanksgiving has rolled around again, and with it comes that familiar mix of family time, big meals, and the occasional last-minute dash to the store when someone realizes an ingredient has gone missing. But if you were thinking about making a quick run to Costco this Thanksgiving, it’s worth knowing ahead of time that the warehouses will not be open. According to the company’s official information, all Costco locations are closed for the holiday, so those giant carts and bulk bargains will have to wait until the next day.
Now, this isn’t unusual for Costco—they’ve always been pretty committed to giving employees major holidays off. But it does mean that anyone planning a last-minute grocery rescue mission is going to need to look elsewhere. The good news is that quite a few other grocery chains will remain open, although most of them will operate on reduced holiday hours. For instance, Kroger stores are generally shutting down around 4 p.m., while Meijer will be open from early morning until 5 p.m. Whole Foods is open too, but only until midday in most places, and some of their locations in the Northeast won’t open at all. Stores like Harris Teeter, Wegmans, Sprouts Farmers Market, and Giant Eagle are also open for part of the day, though each one has its own early closing time.

On the flip side, Costco isn’t the only major chain taking Thanksgiving completely off. Big names like Target, Walmart, Publix, Aldi, Trader Joe’s, Sam’s Club, and Winn-Dixie are all keeping their doors shut. Many large retail stores will also be closed for the holiday, from Best Buy and Kohl’s to Macy’s, Home Depot, Lowe’s, and several others. So, for anyone planning to buy something other than groceries, the options are going to be limited.
There are a couple of retail exceptions, though. Bass Pro Shops and Cabela’s plan to open later in the morning and stay open until early evening, giving shoppers a relatively small but useful window if they really need something before the holiday feast.
The bright side is that Costco will open back up on Black Friday, and those doors tend to swing wide with some pretty big deals waiting inside. If you want to know exactly when your local warehouse opens the day after Thanksgiving, the company recommends checking the warehouse locator, since hours can vary depending on the location.
So, in short: Costco is closed on Thanksgiving Day 2025, but it’ll be back in full swing on Black Friday. And if you absolutely need something on the holiday itself, you’ll still have a few grocery and retail options—just expect shorter hours and bigger crowds as everyone else does the same last-minute scramble.
