Cowboys and Chiefs Set for a Thanksgiving Showdown

Alright, so this Cowboys–Chiefs matchup is shaping up to be one of the most intriguing Thanksgiving games we’ve had in a long time. It’s actually the first time these two teams will meet on Thanksgiving since 1995, when Troy Aikman and the Cowboys handled Steve Bono and the Chiefs 24–12. And now, nearly 30 years later, we’re getting a completely different era of football: Dak Prescott leading Dallas, Patrick Mahomes leading Kansas City, and both teams fighting to stay afloat in the playoff race.

What makes this game so interesting is the momentum shift for Dallas. A month ago, the Cowboys were sitting at 3-5-1 after getting embarrassed by the Cardinals, and it felt like the season was slipping away. But after the trade deadline and the bye week, the roster was noticeably upgraded. Quinnen Williams arrived and immediately began making an impact. Logan Wilson brought leadership to the linebacker group. DeMarvion Overshown returned with energy. Even Caelen Carson looked refreshed after coming off IR. The whole defensive identity is starting to look different — faster, more disruptive, more confident.

But the one thing still dragging Dallas down is their own mistakes. Penalties, drive-killing miscommunications, and missed chances continue to show up at the worst times. If those show up again against Kansas City, the Cowboys could easily find themselves eating a Thanksgiving loss. Because Mahomes may not be lighting up defenses quite like he used to, but he’s still Mahomes — and even though Travis Kelce isn’t the unstoppable force he once was, he’s still dangerous enough to change a game if ignored.

Some of the staff predictions lean toward the Cowboys finally breaking through, especially with how well the defense has stopped the run recently. That’s going to matter when Kansas City tries to get Isaiah Pacheco going. And the Dallas offensive line just came off a strong performance against the Eagles, which gives a lot of people confidence that Prescott can operate cleanly for most of the game.

But not everyone is buying that momentum. There’s real concern about whether this Dallas secondary can truly handle a top-tier passing offense. Kansas City is ranked second in the league through the air — and unlike the last two opponents, Mahomes actually has the weapons to stretch the field. The Chiefs might be 6–5, but every one of their losses has been by a single possession, and now their offensive pieces are lining up healthy at the right time.

So the predictions go both ways: a couple lean Cowboys in a tight one, a couple lean Chiefs in a high-scoring shootout. But the common thread is this — we’re about to find out whether this new-look Dallas defense is real or just temporarily improved, and whether the Cowboys can finally stack three straight wins for the first time since 2023.

Either way, it feels like we’re in for a dramatic Thanksgiving classic.
