Cowboys Eyeing Long-Term Deal with George Pickens, Franchise Tag a Possibility
When the Dallas Cowboys traded for wide receiver George Pickens back in May, the hope was that they would eventually face the challenge of keeping him beyond the 2025 season. As it stands, that challenge is quickly becoming a reality. Now more than halfway through his first season in Dallas, Pickens has been nothing short of spectacular, especially with his performance on Monday night, where he racked up 144 yards and a touchdown against the Raiders. His standout play has shown just how valuable he is to the Cowboys, and Dallas is determined to keep him around for the long haul.
Currently in the final year of his rookie contract, Pickens is set to become an unrestricted free agent in March 2026. With over 900 receiving yards, including 227 yards on tight-window targets, Pickens has proven he belongs among the NFL’s elite wide receivers. His performance has placed him in contention to become one of the highest-paid receivers in the league. With CeeDee Lamb already securing a lucrative deal, the Cowboys will have to make a tough decision on how to retain both of their star receivers.

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has made it clear that he values Pickens highly, referring to his performance against the Raiders as "poetic," likening it to a ballet or opera. While the Cowboys have not yet engaged in contract talks with Pickens, sources indicate that the team is exploring several options to secure his future in Dallas.
One likely scenario is the use of the franchise tag, which would cost the Cowboys over $28 million for one season. This would give Dallas more time to negotiate a long-term deal with Pickens while preventing him from hitting the open market. However, the franchise tag could also complicate the Cowboys’ salary cap situation. With limited cap space in 2026, finding a way to retain Pickens while managing other roster needs will require some creative financial maneuvering.
There is also the possibility of using the franchise tag and trading Pickens for future draft picks, though that would be a backup option. Team sources suggest that securing a long-term contract with Pickens remains the preferred route. However, there are other financial considerations at play. The Cowboys also have a key decision to make regarding their star kicker, Brandon Aubrey, who is also in a contract year. Only one franchise tag can be used per offseason, and while Aubrey is a strong candidate, keeping Pickens in Dallas seems to be the priority.
While the situation is far from settled, both Pickens and the Cowboys’ other top receiver, CeeDee Lamb, have expressed their desire to remain in Dallas. Lamb, who has been a mentor to Pickens, believes the wide receiver has found a home with the Cowboys.
