De’Aaron Fox Set for Season Debut, Spurs Look to Regain Momentum

It looks like the wait is finally over for San Antonio Spurs fans — De’Aaron Fox is officially set to make his season debut this Saturday when the Spurs face off against the New Orleans Pelicans. After missing the first seven games due to a preseason hamstring injury, Fox has been steadily working his way back, and sources confirm he’s ready to go.

Fox injured his left hamstring during a workout back in August, and since then, he’s been rehabbing and taking it slow. But over the past week, he’s been seen moving smoothly during warmups, a sign that his return was right around the corner. Even though he’ll sit out Friday’s NBA Cup matchup against Kevin Durant and the Houston Rockets, his presence on Saturday could be a much-needed boost for a Spurs squad that’s been hit hard by early-season injuries.

The Spurs have been trying to stay afloat without several key players. Rookie standout Dylan Harper is expected to miss multiple weeks with a calf strain, though the MRI results were thankfully not serious. Jeremy Sochan, Kelly Olynyk, and Lindy Waters III all made their long-awaited returns earlier this week, while backup center Luke Kornet remains out with an ankle issue.

For San Antonio, Fox’s comeback couldn’t come at a better time. The team’s offense has started to stall as opponents have figured out how to contain Victor Wembanyama. The Spurs have missed having a veteran guard who can take control of the offense, push the pace, and create opportunities off the pick-and-roll. That’s exactly what Fox brings — speed, control, and veteran experience.

It’s worth noting that Fox has only played 17 games for the Spurs since being traded last February. He even battled through a dislocated finger before undergoing surgery earlier this year. Because of injuries on both sides, Fox and Wembanyama have barely shared the court — only five games together so far. But this weekend could finally mark the start of their first real run as a full-strength duo.

The Spurs got off to a hot 5–0 start this season, their best in franchise history, but they’ve hit a few bumps since. Head coach Mitch Johnson has been open about needing time to find the right lineup combinations, especially around Wembanyama. Until now, the point guard duties have fallen mostly on Stephon Castle and Harper, both young players who’ve done well but still lack Fox’s leadership and tempo control.

The big picture here goes beyond just Saturday’s game. Fox’s return also sets the stage for the Spurs to evaluate their future backcourt. With Castle, Harper, and Fox all capable of running the offense, San Antonio will eventually have to make some tough roster choices. But for now, one thing is clear — Fox is the missing piece the Spurs have been waiting for.

After signing a massive four-year, $229 million deal before the season, Fox is locked in as a cornerstone alongside Wembanyama. And as both players hit their stride, the Spurs’ offense should finally start to look like the dynamic, high-tempo unit fans have been hoping for. With Fox back, San Antonio isn’t just getting its star guard — it’s getting its rhythm back too.
