Dodgers Reliever Alex Vesia Steps Away During World Series for Family Matter
It’s been an emotional time for the Los Angeles Dodgers as left-handed reliever Alex Vesia has stepped away from the team due to a deeply personal family matter. The announcement came just before the release of the Dodgers’ World Series roster, and Vesia’s absence was quickly noticed by fans and teammates alike.
The team issued a heartfelt statement, saying, “It’s with a heavy heart that we share that Alex Vesia is away from the team as he and his wife Kayla navigate a deeply personal family matter. The entire Dodger organization is sending our thoughts to the Vesia family, and we will provide an update at a later date.”
Dodgers manager Dave Roberts confirmed that Vesia would most likely miss the entire World Series. Speaking before Game 1, Roberts explained that the organization wanted to give him the space and privacy he needed during this time. President of baseball operations Andrew Friedman also clarified that Vesia was not placed on the official family medical emergency list — a move that would have allowed him to return within a few days — emphasizing instead that the team didn’t want to create any unnecessary pressure.

“This is so much bigger than baseball,” Friedman said on Friday. “For us, it was about doing whatever we could to be completely supportive.”
Vesia’s absence will definitely be felt on the field. Throughout the regular season, he was one of the Dodgers’ most reliable bullpen arms, finishing with a 3.02 ERA across 68 outings. In the postseason, he had already appeared in seven of the team’s ten games, often stepping into high-pressure situations to stop late-inning rallies. That kind of consistency and poise isn’t easy to replace — and Roberts acknowledged as much.
“We have a lot of viable options,” Roberts said. “I don’t know what situation will present itself, but I trust all the guys. Alex is certainly going to be missed.”
To adjust the bullpen for the World Series, the Dodgers added right-handers Edgardo Henriquez and Will Klein. Meanwhile, southpaw Tanner Scott, who’s been recovering from a medical procedure, was not included on the roster.
While the Dodgers now focus on closing out the Fall Classic without one of their most dependable relievers, the real story here extends beyond baseball. The team and fans alike have rallied around Vesia, offering support as he and his family face a personal challenge. In moments like this, the sport takes a back seat — and the Dodgers’ unity and compassion shine through far more than any box score ever could.
